Also serving as chief of staff since 1989 and chairman of internal medicine since 1981, Dr. Yamagata received his Bachelor's degree at the University of Tokyo in 1972, followed by an MD at Loma Linda University in the U.S. in 1976. Having served his residency from 1976 to 1980, Dr. Yamagata is also a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Hospice and Palliative Care. From 1996 to 2001, he also served as vice president of the Kobe Adventist Hospital.

A fellow of the American College of Physicians, Dr. Yamagata also remains active as a longstanding member of several other organizations, including the Japanese Society of Internal Medicine, the Japanese Society for Palliative Medicine, the Japanese Medical Association, and the American Academy for Hospice and Palliative Care, among others.
Married to Aiko Hirose since 1975, Dr. Yamagata is the proud father of three children. In addition to his professional accomplishments, Dr. Yamagata was given the governor's award by Hyogo Prefecture in 2014 for pioneer works in the field of hospice and palliative medicine, and in 2015, he was promoted to a special achievement member by the Hyogo Medical Association. He has been highlighted in 10 editions of Who's Who in Asia and Who's Who in the World.
