Dr. Byeon is a professor of inorganic and solid state chemistry who has made significant contributions to his field through his research and role as an educator. In 1979, Dr. Byeon began his studies at one of the Republic of Korea's top universities, Seoul National University. During this period, he served in the Korean Armed Forces from 1981 to 1983. Dr. Byeon graduated with a BS in 1986 before continuing his studies at Seoul National University, earning a MS in 1988. From 1988 to 1991, Dr. Byeon traveled to France to study at the University of Bordeaux, where he obtained a PhD in material science.
Following his graduation, Dr. Byeon performed post-doctoral work at a research laboratory at the Tokyo Institute of Technology. In 1992, he returned to the Republic of Korea to work as a senior researcher at the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute. A year later, Dr. Byeon became an assistant professor of chemistry at Kyung Hee University. In 1997, he was promoted to the position of associate professor at this same university. Dr. Byeon remained at Kyung Hee University until 2003 when he became a visiting research professor at Stony Brook University.
Soon after, Dr. Byeon returned to Kyung Hee University as a professor within the College of Environment and Applied Chemistry. He continues to work in this positon to this day. The son of Il-Kuk Byeon and Boon-Seon Park, Dr. Byeon married Ji-Yeon Roh. Together, the couple raised two children: In-Jin and Hee-Jin.
