A professor at Saint Lawrence University, Dr. Young quickly became a staple at the very successful private institution. Beginning his career in academia as a visiting assistant professor at the University of Colorado in Denver for a year, Dr. Young then accepted a position at Marshall University in West Virginia as an assistant professor. In 1980, Dr. Young had the opportunity to first teach at Saint Lawrence as an assistant professor of economics. Finding a comfortable residence in Canton, NY, Dr. Young has since been named an A. Barton Hepburn professor of economics in 1994, and has been teaching in this capacity ever since.

During Dr. Young's extensive career in higher education, he has taught more than a dozen different courses, including Principles of Economics, Intermediate Microeconomics and Intermediate Macroeconomics, and Contemporary Economic Thought. First inspired by his father, who was a successful political scientist, to pursue a career in this specific field, Dr. Young's field of specialization includes history of economic thought and methodology, macroeconomic theory, and natural resources and environmental economics.

In the mid-1990s, Dr. Young was a research visitor at the University of Newcastle, Australia. He then spent time as an honorary research fellow at the University of Glasgow, Scotland, and was a visiting professor of economics and business at Gordon College in Wenham, MA. He has also served as a lecturer in his field of expertise several times, including in Tokyo, Chile, Australia, Israel, and Turkey, and was invited to speak at a number of research seminars at universities internationally. His extensive research in the field has also led to the publication of dozens of articles in professional journals, including in the Eastern Economic Journal, the European Journal of the History of Economic Thought, and the History of Political Economy Supplement.

In 1987, one of Dr. Young's articles was nominated for a James L. Clifford Prize, given by the American Society for Eighteenth Century Studies. Furthermore, he has authored several chapters to books and has authored two of his own books: "Classical Theories of Value" in 1978 and "Economics as a Moral Science: The Political Economy of Adam Smith" in 1997.

Dr. Young first earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Maine in 1971 before completing a PhD in Economics at the University of Colorado in 1975, where he was honored with a Distinguished Thesis Award. He has also been active as a longstanding member of the American Economic Association, the Association of Christian Economists, the European Society for the History of Economic Thought, the History of Economics Society, and the International Adam Smith Society.

Dr. Young has also been well-known for his interest in his community. He was a Sunday school teacher and a college-age youth counselor at Beverly Hills Baptist Church during his years in West Virginia, as well as a member of the board of deacons at Calvary Baptist Church in Canton. Additionally, Dr. Young has held the positions of a follow-up director for the capital stewardship campaign and a member of the board of deacons for the Christian Fellowship Center in Madrid, NY. He served as a faculty advisor for Intervarsity Christian Fellowship from 1998 to 2007.

Recognized as a leader in his field, Dr. Young has been highlighted in Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, and Who's Who in the East. Married to Cheryl Eileen Merrifield for nearly 50 years with two children, Dr. Young loves to read, play basketball, and go cross country skiing.
