His greatest gratification is treating critically ill patients in the intensive care unit, with a philosophy of close follow-ups after a diagnosis to prevent further cardiac problems. Dr. Hodess is an expert in echocardiography and electrophysiology, and has served the state of Pennsylvania since 1974.
Born in 1950 to Samuel and Dora Hodess in New York, NY, Dr. Hodess studied at Boston University, graduating magna cum laude with a BA. He completed a medical doctorate at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1974. He served both an internship and a residency with the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, located in the heart of Philadelphia. In 1974, Dr. Hodess accepted a teaching position with the university followed by a fellowship in cardiology. He transitioned briefly into the department of animal biology as an instructor with the university's School of Veterinary Medicine, where he was a cardiovascular research fellow, and served as a clinical associate until 1981.
Dr. Hodess was welcomed by Brandywine as an attending physician in 1979, and 10 years later, he became director of critical care at the hospital. In 1990, he accepted the additional position of chief of cardiology, and from 1991 to 2010, he was president of the Brandywine Valley Cardiovascular Associates. Dr. Hodess has therefore been in a uniquely advantageous position to provide cardiology diagnoses, management, and follow up care in the same facility. In 2009, he was named trustee of the Brandywine Hospital for his many years of dedication.
Dr. Hodess is a fellow of the American College of Physicians, the American Society of Angiology, the American Society of Echocardiography, the American College of Chest Physicians, the American College of Cardiology, and the honor society Alpha Omega Alpha. He is a member of the Society of Cadiovascular Computed Tomography, the Society of Critical Care Medicine, and the Cadiac Electrophysiology Society. In particular, he has been named a fellow of the clinical council of the American Heart Association. In the civic sphere, Dr. Hodess has been a vice president with the Chestnut Hollow Homeowners Association in West Chester, Pennsylvania, as well as a director with the Beth Israel Congregation in Chester County.
For his many years of medical service to the people of Pennsylvania, Dr. Hodess was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who in the World. He is the father of five sons, and enjoys music, tennis, fitness training, theater, and the opera.
