Widely regarded for her dedication to special education, Dr. Pollara has served as the principal of Kelly Elementary for nearly a decade. During this time, she was instrumental in facilitating a video conference with Commander Scott Kelly during his Year In Space Mission on the International Space Station. Formerly known as Pleasantdale Elementary, Kelly Elementary was renamed in 2016 to honor twin astronauts Capt. Mark Kelly and Capt. Scott Kelly who are alumni of the school. Dr. Pollara previously served as a special education teacher, Learning Disabilities Teacher-Consultant and supervisor of special education with West Orange Public Schools. She has been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in the World.
Noted for her lifelong love of learning, Dr. Pollara was inspired to pursue a career in education by her outstanding teachers, most notably her mother as well as her personal desire to provide all students the opportunity for success. She attended St. Joseph College, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in 1976. Since entering a career in education, Dr. Pollara has developed a distinct focus on special education and educational diagnosis. Her article on 9th grade small learning communities was published in Educational Viewpoints in 2010.
Throughout the course of her career, Dr. Pollara has held various educational roles, including as a 4th grade teacher, bedside instructor, and teacher of students with disabilities. Dr. Pollara has served with institutions throughout New Jersey, such as the Holy Trinity School in Hackensack, and Kessler Institute in West Orange. She has served the West Orange Board of Education for more than 30 years. In 1994, she completed a Master of Arts at Montclair State University. Dr. Pollara went on to receive a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from the College of Saint Elizabeth in 2012.
Previously, Dr. Pollara served as a member of the special education curriculum committee in West Orange in 1989. In addition, she is a former member of the building management committee, as well as a special education representative with the reading curriculum committee and PTA faculty representative. Dr. Pollara is certified in elementary education and special education in New Jersey, and is a professionally recognized special educator in educational diagnosis, as well as a certified Learning Disabilities Teacher Consultant. She holds a New Jersey certification as a supervisor, principal and chief school administrator. She maintains involvement with the Council for Exceptional Children, Educational Diagnosis Division, Association of Learning Consultants in addition to being a member of the learning-disabilities division of the Council for Exceptional Children. Additionally she was awarded membership in Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society through Montclair State University and Kappa Gamma Pi, the National Catholic College Graduate Honor Society through the College of St. Elizabeth.
