When she first started in education, she joined Augustana College as a teaching assistant. From there, she became a teaching fellow and then research assistant with the University of Colorado, Boulder. Over many years, she has held several academic roles such as instructor, assistant professor and associate professor for Pacific Lutheran University, Fisk University, and Kansas State University.
A graduate of Augustana College, the University of Colorado, and Northern Arizona University, Dr. Stalheim-Smith holds a Bachelor of Science, a Master of Science, and a PhD. Her professional affiliations include the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Society of Zoologists. Throughout her career, she has contributed her valuable knowledge to the "Understanding Human Anatomy and Physiology" textbook, which was co-authored with Greg K. Fitch in 1993. In addition to earning a number of grants in the field, Dr. Stalheim-Smith was named University Distinguished Teaching Scholar Chair (1997-1998), the highest award Kansas State University gives a faculty member in teaching (in all 8 colleges). She has had the honor of being featured in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who of American Women, and Who's Who Amongst Students in American Colleges and Universities.
