A widely renowned anesthesiologist, Dr. Benzon has served as attending staff with Northwestern Memorial Hospital for more than 40 years. He previously assisted the hospital as a senior associate chair for academic affairs and chief of the section of pain medicine. Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Benzon has been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in the Midwest, Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America and Who's Who in the World. He has been recognized in "America's Top Doctors" and "Best Doctors in America." Most recently, he was selected as the recipient of the John J. Bonica Award in Pain Medicine by the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine, the premier organization on pain medicine and regional anesthesia in the U.S.
An established authority in the management of chronic pain, Dr. Benzon is the chief editor of the book, "Essentials of Pain Medicine and Regional Anesthesia," which has provided a wealth of knowledge to residents and fellows studying pain medicine in neurology. The fourth edition of the book will be released next year, marking a period of more than two decades since the book's release. As the chief editor of the book, Dr. Benzon draws upon established expertise in the management of chronic pain, including lower back, neuropathic, cancer and myofascial, management of acute postoperative pain, regional anesthesia, outcome measures in pain research, and safety and neuraxial and regional anesthesia, such as anticoagulation and regional anesthesia.
Prior to pursuing a career in medicine, Dr. Benzon attended Far Eastern University, where he received a Bachelor of Science in 1966 and an MD in 1971. He went on to complete an internship at Overlook Hospital, as well as residencies in anesthesia at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center and Northwestern University. In 1976, he joined Northwestern University as an instructor of medical school. During the next two decades, he held a range of positions with the university, including as an assistant professor of anesthesia and associate professor.
From 1994 to 2006, Dr. Benzon served as a professor of anesthesiology and program director of the pain medicine fellowship program with Northwestern University. He also briefly served as an instructor of the department of anesthesia with Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Benzon recently celebrated four decades as an instructor of anesthesia and pain medicine, a role he chose to pursue as a way to remain active and engaged in his fields of expertise. He hopes that his involvement in education will allow for further advancements in science and medicine. In addition, Dr. Benzon maintains involvement with a wide range of medical organizations, including the American Society of Anesthesiologists and American Society of Regional Anesthesia. He is the former president of the Midwest Pain Society and Association of Pain Program Directors.
Since entering the medical profession, Dr. Benzon has been licensed to practice in Illinois. He is certified in anesthesiology and pain medicine through the American Board of Anesthesiology, as well as a recognized fellow with the American College of Anesthesiologists and Chicago Institute of Medicine. Dr. Benzon has served as an editor for numerous publications pertaining to his areas of expertise, including "Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine," "Pain Practice" and "Anesthesia and Analgesia."
