A retired chartered chemist of 40 years, Dr. Sethi served as a senior research associate for the Institute of Biotechnology at the University of Cambridge from 1998 to 2006 and is well known for his work there in the decontamination of surgical instruments related to Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (vCJD), a fatal condition in humans thought to originate with Mad Cow disease, or bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). He worked with the British Department of Health and 20 leading universities and teaching hospitals to prevent any further human fatalities and to curb a disease that resulted in the destruction of thousands of cows, with severe impact to the British beef industry. He is credited as a co-author on the development of the world's first reported microelectronic biosensor based on a silicon chip and worked on ion implantation of solid dielectrics, another world first. Dr. Sethi has served as a chief chemist for GEC-Marconi Material Technology in the UK and as a chief chemist, senior principal scientist, principal scientist, and senior scientist for Plessey Company, Ltd.
After the completion of a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry with honors in 1960 and a Master of Science in Chemistry in 1962 at Delhi University, Dr. Sethi was a research fellow at the university from 1962 to 1966. He completed a PhD in Physical Chemistry that same year, and from 1966 to 1970, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Imperial College in London from 1966 to 1970.
Dr. Sethi has focused his work on sensor technology, including magnetic acoustic resonators, surface acoustic wave devices, Love-wave devices, and other microelectronics, a group loosely referred to as molecular electronics. He has contributed to over 200 government reports and 40 journals, and wrote a chapter for the book "Special Polymers for Electronics and Optoelectronics." He is the author of "Electrochemistry" published in 1970 by the Chemical Society of London, England. Dr. Sethi has also served as an industrial PhD supervisor and industrial advisor for the School of Natural and Environmental Sciences at Coventry University in the UK, as well as an industrial partner for the Institute of Biotechnology at both the University of Cambridge and Brunel University in West London from 1992 to 1996. He has worked with some of the most prestigious laboratories in the world, including the Lewis Research Center of NASA, the U.S. Naval Research Lab, and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
A chartered fellow and representative of the Royal Society of Chemistry as well as a fellow and honorary representative of the UK Parliament Society Link, Dr. Sethi is also a former member of the Electrochemical Society of the USA. He holds patents for silicon chips and wafer-based biosensors, optical fibers, electrolytes for aluminum electrolytic capacitors, and improvements for dielectric film technology through ion implantation and doping by electrochemical techniques. On multiple occasions, Dr. Sethi has been asked to represent Institute of Biotechnology at Cambridge during the beginning of the academic year in deference to his seniority and prestige at the illustrious university.
Dr. Sethi became a citizen of the UK in 1966 and married his wife Harbans in 1969, with whom he has had two children. He was featured in the pages of Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the World 25 times, and loves photography, gardening, ping pong table tennis, and listening to classical music.
