Mr. Materna offers his expertise to clients in practice areas that include everything from probate, estate planning, trusts and estate administration, wills, testamentary trusts, healthcare proxies, powers of attorney, and all aspects of real estate.
Outside of the office, Mr. Materna has spent time lecturing in his field and has been serving as an expert witness in trusts and estate litigations since 1999. He has also been published several times in The Arthritis Reporter on various issues, including "Charitable Giving Under Your Will" and "New U.S. Estate and Gift Tax Rules for Non-Citizen Spouses." Admitted as a member of the bar in both New York and Florida, as well as the Southern and Eastern Districts of the U.S. District Court, the Federal Circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals, the U.S. Tax Court, the Supreme Court of the United States, and the Florida Probate Courts for all counties, Mr. Materna first studied at Columbia University, where he earned both a Bachelor's degree in 1969 and a JD in 1973.
A member of many organizations relative to his work, Mr. Materna remains affiliated with the American Bar Association, the Bar Association of New York City, and the New York State Bar Association, where he served on the Committee on Estates and Trusts and the Committee on Surrogate's Court. He is also a member of the Richmond County Bar Association, the Queens Bar Association, and the American Judges Association, where he also served in various capacities. With regards to his community, Mr. Materna has lent his expertise by serving in a number of roles for the Arthritis Foundation in New York City as a member of the Board of Trustees, as a member of the Bequests and planned Gifts Committee of the Archdiocese of New York, and as a member of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering National Trusts and Estates Associates.
Mr. Materna has received a Martindale-Hubbell Peer Review AV Rating consistently for 25 years, and was designated a Preeminent AV Legal Rated Attorney since 2010, the highest possible rating in legal ability and ethical standards. He was recognized among Top Trusts & Estates Attorneys in New York City by Avenue Magazine, named to Top 100 Trusts & Estate Attorneys in New York State by The American Society of Legal Advocates every year since 2014, and has been named an Accredited Estate Planner by the National Association of Estate Planners since1995.
