CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA, October 25, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Stuart John Saunders, MD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Saunders celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
A retired vice chancellor at the University of Cape Town since 1996, Dr. Saunders notably served as the university's head of the department of medicine from 1971 to 1980, and taught as a full professor while working concurrently as deputy principal for planning. Instrumental in moving the university forward both academically and culturally, Dr. Saunders was credited for putting an end to the racially segregated training of medical registrars and for admitting students of all races to the University of Cape Town's residences. He was also well-known for refusing to bend to the will of the apartheid state as well as for initiating fundraising among South African universities to ensure their academic freedom and meaningful service to science and the 'rainbow nation.' Dr. Saunder's experiences are collected in his autobiography, "Vice-Chancellor on a Tightrope."
Dr. Saunders received an MBChB at the University of Cape Town with honors in 1953. He completed postgraduate work at both the Royal Postgraduate Medical School at Hammersmith in London as well as at Harvard University. In 1965, he earned an MD at the University of Cape Town. Dr. Saunders spent his earlier years as a registrar in pathology and medicine and then as a lecturer and senior lecturer at Groote Shuur Hospital of the University of Cape Town from 1955 and 1971. He worked briefly in private practice between teaching positions, but the main body of his work has been in research and education. Before he entered academia, he was a fellow in medicine at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital. He is the co-founder of a liver clinic and liver research unit, a field in which he wrote more than two hundred articles and co-authored a study that has since become a classical reference. Dr. Saunders served as a vice chancellor with the University of Capetown for 15 years, and is now retired.
A fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London, the College of Physicians of South Africa, and the Royal Society of South Africa, Dr. Saunders is active as a member of Owl of Cape Town and was a senior advisor of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to the humanities and the arts. A trustee of the Claude Leon Foundation, the Fox Foundation, and the Webb Trust, he is a former Fulbright commissioner and former trustee and chair of the Friends of Valkenburg, which is the psychiatry teaching hospital of the University of Cape Town. Dr. Saunders famously quit the South African Medical Association for failing to take action against district surgeons who were treating Steve Biko at the time of his murder by apartheid operatives. Dr. Saunders served as president of the University of Cape Town convocation for 13 years, and as founder and chairman of Tertiary Education Network, a nonprofit that pioneered higher education digital connectivity. Furthermore, he served on the National Working Group, which was established by the Minister of Education to look at the restructuring of Higher Education, as well as on the advisory council for National Orders and the Council for Higher Education. The recipient of several honorary degrees, including from the University of Aberdeen, Princeton University, and the University of Cape Town, Dr. Saunders has been married to Anita Louw since 1984, with two children and five grandchildren. He has twice been highlighted in Who's Who in the World.
