Dr. Zarate is a physician, a nephrologist with more than 40 years of experience in the health care industry. He is well known for his research in kidney disease and dialysis, and has filled the role of medical director of numerous dialysis clinics for more than 15 years. In 2000, he founded Biomedical Enterprises, Incorporated, where he currently holds the positions of president and chief executive officer. The company focuses on the research, development, and commercialization of dialysis products.
Dr. Zarate also served as the principle investigator for the research and development of innovative designs for dialysis vascular access and dialysis needles; several grants were awarded by the National Institutes of Health and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive to conduct this research. These awards amounted to $1.5 million dollars, and the studies allowed Dr. Zarate to discover an overlooked major cause of inflammation and morbidity in dialysis patients and to design new devices to decrease inflammation.
Outside of his career at Biomedical Enterprises, Dr. Zarate was also a former consultant clinical nephrologist at the National Institute of Health Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. In addition, he also served as the director of several startup companies, including Eka Systems, Incorporated (sold to Copper Power Systems, LLC); he also developed and managed two dialysis clinics located in Washington D.C. and Maryland which merged with Vivra incorporated in 1992. Vivra was acquired by Gambro-second largest dialysis company in the world- a few years later, and Gambro was subsequently acquired by DaVita. He also served as a medical director at Silver Hill Kidney Center from 1990 to 2013 as well as at the Cleveland Park Kidney Center from 1987 to 2000. Dr. Zarate served as chief executive officer of the Cleveland Park Kidney Center from 1987 to 1992 and of the Silver Hill Kidney center from 1990 to 1992.
In 1968, Dr. Zarate graduated with a Doctor in Medicine from the University of Littoral in Rosario, Argentina. He completed his residency at the Institute of Investigaciones Medicas in Buenos Aires in 1969 and at the Roger Williams General Hospital at Brown University from 1971 to 1973. He completed additional medical training as fellow in nephrology at Medstar Georgetown University and at the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research, and as a bench researcher and at the National Institutes of Health. He is licensed to practice in Washington D.C. and Maryland. He is also board certified to practice in internal medicine and nephrology, and is a diplomate of the Educational Council of Foreign Medical Graduates.
Dr. Zarate was also trained in lithotripsy at the Akademisched Lehrkrankenhaus Munchen in 1993. He currently acts as a member of the medical staff at Georgetown University Hospital and Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. He was a member of special project panels that reviewed research grant applications submitted to the National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases and the National Institute of Health. He is the inventor of a patented new design of a dialysis needle and of several other dialysis products; the new design of the needle was chosen by the National Institutes of Health for commercialization assistance. He has contributed questions to the American Board of Internal Medicine for the recertification examination in nephrology in 1993, 1994 and 1995, and he is the author of several manuscripts, articles and abstracts in professional journals. Additionally, he has lectured at medical conferences in Europe and the United States. Dr. Zarate and colleagues were the first to report the occurrence of Hyperkeratosis Penetrans (Kyrle's disease) in dialysis patients.
Dr. Zarate previously served in academia, holding the tile of clinical assistant professor and clinical associate professor of medicine at the George Washington University from 1993 to 2005 and from 2005 to 2015, respectively. He also served as instructor of medicine and as clinical assistant professor of medicine at Georgetown University from 1975 to 1980 and 1986 to 2000 respectively.
Dr. Zarate has served as a medical consultant in Washington, D.C. since 1998. He was a delegate for the renal network of the Medical Society of the District of Columbia and previously served the society as a member of the bioethics committee. Dr. Zarate also served as member of multiple organizations including the alumni association of the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research The Georgetown University Alumni Association, the International Society of Nephrology, the American Society of Nephrology, the National Kidney Foundation, the New York Academy of Sciences, and the Georgetown University Legacy Society.
Dr. Zarate was awarded Small Business Innovation Research Grants by the National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases, Branch of the National Institute of Health, in 1999, 2002, 2004-2007 and 2014. He was also honored as a listee in the Guide to America's Top Physicians from 2007-2008 and in 2012. As a young physician, he was awarded the Clemente Alvarez Scholarship by the Universidad Nacional del Littoral from 1968 to 1969.
Dr. Zarate has also been featured in Marquis Who's Who in America, 55th edition. Dr. Zarate is the son of Adolfo Zarate and Aurora Rodriguez Sager. He is married to Bridget B. Bayly, with whom he has had four children: Alfred R., Andrew R., Alexander R., and Adrian R. In his spare time, he enjoys reading, fishing, playing tennis, and theater. He is a member of the Cosmos Club of Washington DC.
