Since 2012, Dr. Brevik has been professor of geology and soils and chair of the Department of Natural Sciences at Dickinson State University, where his research ranges from control of nitrous oxide emissions from agricultural soils to soil science history. He has received a total of $1,388,350 of external funding toward his research over many years of scientific excellence, most recently with a 2016 Lloyd R. Frederick Soil Teaching Travel Study Award from the Soil Science Society of America. This year, Dr. Brevik was also appointed vice chair of the Cultural Patterns of Soil Understanding working group with the International Union of Soil Sciences, and is working with the Education and Practicing Professionals group of the Soil Science Society of America as a board of directors representative.
An alumnus of the University of North Dakota, Dr. Brevik earned a BS in geology, cum laude, in 1992, followed by an MA in geology with a concentration in geomorphology. He performed research with the University of North Dakota, and was able to join the North Dakota Geological Survey as a student intern in 1992. Dr. Brevik became a part-time instructor with the Drake University Department of Geography and Geology in 1994 and worked as an environmental consultant in Des Moines, Iowa. He then taught as a graduate teaching assistant with Iowa State University, served as an intern with the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture, and consulted with SRI Consultants before he earned a PhD from Iowa State in 2001. His focus was on soil morphology and genesis, and he wrote his dissertation on the application of electromagnetic induction technology to soil science investigations in Iowa. As a newly minted doctor of soil science, Dr. Brevik taught with Valdosta State University from 2001 to 2007, and was welcomed by Dickinson State as an associate professor in 2007.
Dr. Brevik has been awarded numerous paper awards, academic excellence awards, and research prizes, starting when he attained the prestigious Eagle Scout award from the Boy Scouts of America in 1986. He was a 1988 Presidential Freshman Scholar at the University of North Dakota, and earned a 1988 to 1992 Presidential Scholarship there. Dr. Brevik participated in the Top Seniors in Geology Program of the Geological Society of America and was admitted to the earth science honor society Sigma Gamma Epsilon, the Sigma Xi science honor society, the Phi Kappa Phi academic honor society, the Gamma Sigma Delta agriculture honor society, and the Gamma Theta Upsilon honor society of geography. He was recognized as the 2010 Distinguished Teacher of the Year at Dickinson State, and is a member of many professional associations, including the European Geosciences Union, the History of Earth Sciences Society, the International Commission on the History of Geological Sciences, the International Union of Soil Sciences, and the Soil Science Society of America. In addition to numerous articles and peer reviewing for the scientific literature, Dr. Brevik has served on numerous editorial boards, and currently holds a seat with the board of Agriculture.
