A professor emeritus and former medical director in the division of pediatric surgery at The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Children's Hospital in Charleston, S.C., Dr. Othersen officially retired in 2005. A longtime pediatric surgeon, physician, and educator of more than 50 years, who also spent time as the chief of the division of pediatric surgery, Dr. Othersen has become a beloved and well-respected professional in his field, both at MUSC as well as in the community. Although now retired, he continues to run a surgical alumni program at MUSC, which educates and trains surgical residents and medical students once per week.
Certified by the American Board of Surgery in 1963, in thoracic surgery in 1966, and in pediatric surgery in 1975, Dr. Othersen's special interests have included cancer in children, trauma and burns in children, tracheal and esophageal structures, nutritional support of children, and laparoscopic procedures. In honor of his contributions to the advancement of pediatric surgery, the department of surgery and the division of pediatric surgery at MUSC have supported and developed the H. Biemann Othersen endowed chair of pediatric surgery. The MUSC's board of trustees will also be naming an operating room after Dr. Othersen in the new Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital once completed in 2019.
After earning a Bachelor of Science with Medicine at the College of Charleston in 1950, Dr. Othersen obtained an MD at the Medical College of South Carolina. He then spent another 12 years working on his post-graduate surgical training at Philadelphia General Hospital, the University of Pennsylvania, the Medical College of South Carolina, the Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, and Massachusetts General Hospital. During this time, he also served in the U.S. Navy for two years.
By 1965, Dr. Othersen had become a faculty member at the MUSC, employed as an assistant professor of surgery and as the university's first chief of pediatric surgery. A pioneer in his field, Dr. Othersen was the first pediatric surgeon in the entire state of South Carolina and one of the first in the entire southeast.
Mr. Othersen later served as medical director at Medical University Hospital, medical director and associate medical director of the MUSC, and as the first medical director of MUSC Children's Hospital. Throughout the duration of his career, he was also active on more than 30 professional organizations where he held several key leadership roles on local, state, national, and international levels, some of which included the Charleston County Medical Society, the South Carolina Pediatric Society, and the American Academy of Pediatrics.
