A distinguished professor of pediatrics-child abuse and neglect and former dean of 25 years at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Dr. Krugman has been instrumental in the lives of so many during the course of his career in higher education. Working at the university's Kempe Center, Pediatric Section of Child Abuse and Neglect, he is a renowned expert in his field.
Founded forty-five years ago in 1972 by Dr. C. Henry Kempe, The Kempe Center was established as a way of evaluating and diagnosing children who are suspected victims of abuse and neglect, providing treatment and therapy for abused and neglected children and their families, as well as developing and testing new programs to help children, training professionals, such as doctors, teachers, and social workers to protect and heal abuse children and support good parenting skills, and conducting studies that assist in program development and public policy making. Employed at the University of Colorado School of Medicine since 1973 as an assistant professor, where Dr. Krugman also completed both his internship and residency, he continues to make a huge impact in his field year after year.
Dr. Krugman is affiliated with the Children's Hospital of Colorado, the University of Colorado Hospital, and the Denver Health Medical Center. Board certified in pediatrics since 1973, he first earned his undergraduate degree in 1963 at the prestigious Princeton University before completing an MD at New York University School of Medicine. Following his residency, he served two years at the National Institutes of Health. He has also been the recipient of two honorary Doctor of Science degrees, one from Odessa State Medical University in the Ukraine and one from Wake Forest University.
He has authored a book, "The Battered Child" (fifth edition), over 100 original papers, chapters and editorials, and is the former editor of the journal "Child Abuse/Neglect", a role he held for 15 years. Furthermore, he has been a contributing author in several hand books of pediatrics.
Dr. Krugman is a member and former president of the International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect, a longtime member of the American Pediatric Society, and a member of the National Academy of Medicine. He is also a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, where he also received a Helfer Award in 1995 and a Brandt Steele Award in 1996. For two years, he served as chairman of the U.S. Advisory Board on Child Abuse and Neglect in Washington. He also spent 11 years as the director of the Kempe National Center for Prevention and Treatment of Child Abuse and Neglect in Denver and, more recently, served as a trustee at Princeton University from 2001 to 2005.
The recipient of a C. Henry Kempe Award at the National Conference on Child Abuse in 1989, Dr. Krugman was a two-time recipient of a St. Geme Award by the University School of Medicine in both 1992 and 1998. Married to Mary Elizabeth Kerber since July 1966, Dr. Krugman later served as a lieutenant commander for the U.S. Public Health Service for two years as well as a major in the U.S. Army Reserve for seven years. He has four sons, and seven grandchildren.
