Retired since 2006, Ms. Gavin was a well-regarded medical/surgical nurse for more than 40 years. Born in Wisconsin, where she spent her entire career, she is a former staff nurse for the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics Authority as well as a home response nurse for the Milwaukee VA Medical Center for the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs.
Ms. Gavin turned down a full scholarship to the University of Wisconsin in 1959 to attend Christian college, and later paid for her education together with her family. She attended North Central College in Naperville, Illinois, for two years before returning to Wisconsin to complete a Bachelor of Science and became a registered nurse at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, Wisconsin in 1964. She later completed postgraduate work in deep muscle therapy. Ms. Gavin remarks that virtue comes before knowledge in her education, and her favorite scripture verse is "And with all diligence add to your faith virtue, and to virtue knowledge" from II Peter 1:5.
During her career, Ms. Gavin spent time as a member of the Task Force for the Handicapped as part of the Eastsinde Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Church and School. She was also a unit chair for the American Legion Auxiliary Badger Girls State and member of the Wisconsin chapter for The American Legion. She is a longtime member of the American Library Association, a former 15-year president of the Monona Grove American Legion Auxiliary, and a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary.
Ms. Gavin has been included in nearly 70 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in American Nursing, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and Who's Who in the World. She was married for nearly 38 years to Alfred Willian Gavin, with whom she has had three children who, in turn, have given her nine grandchildren.
