Currently a professor of oceanography at Florida Institute of Technology (FIT), where he previously served as the head of the marine and environmental systems department from 1994 to 2014, Dr. Maul is a former licensed U.S. merchant marine officer who served nine years as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey. Additionally, he served 25 years as a research oceanographer with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Miami, FL. Teaching ENS 1001 The Whole Earth Course, OCN 2407 Meteorology, OCN 2801 Research Vessel Operations, and OCN 5401 Principles of Physical Oceanography, Dr. Maul previously taught as an adjunct professor of meteorology and physical oceanography at the University of Miami after earning his doctorate degree.
During his time heading the department at Florida Institute of Technology, Dr. Maul supervised 250 undergraduate and graduate level students and 15 faculty members in oceanography, environmental science, ocean engineering, earth remote sensing, and meteorology. He also created the undergraduate and graduate meteorology programs and graduate earth remote sensing program, and raised more than $4 million in endowed fellowships, scholarships, and a professorship.
Dr. Maul's existing research includes quantifying coastal climate and sea-level change, tsunami and other natural hazards in the Intra-Americas Sea, and earth system science education. His research interests have extended to bathymetry, spacecraft oceanography, Gulf of Mexico Loop Current time/history, Florida Current transport variability, satellite altimetry, marine positioning, eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean eddies, small island developing states, USA land temperature and precipitation trends, data archeology, marine meteorology, Intra-Americas Sea circulation, climate change in the Wider Caribbean Region, and coastal ocean observing system development. He has served on numerous boards, including as vice chairman of the sub-commission for the Caribbean and Adjacent Regions (IOCARIBE) of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO, and as founding chairman of the IOCARIBE group of experts on ocean processes and climate.
Upon receiving a Regents Diploma from Brooklyn Technical High School in 1956, Dr. Maul earned a Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation with honors from the State University of New York Maritime College in 1960. Between 1960 and 1969, he held ranks from ensign through lieutenant commander in the commissioned officer corps of the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey before earning a PhD in Physical Oceanography from the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science in 1974. A longtime member of the American Geophysical Union and the Florida Academy of Sciences, where he was the Florida Academy of Sciences Medalist in 2016, Dr. Maul is also an elected fellow of the Marine Technology Society and the American Meteorological Society.
Named College of Engineering Teacher of the Year by FIT's student government in 1997, Dr. Maul also received a Faculty Senate Excellence Award alongside his NASA-funded earth systems science education team, a 2010 U.S. President's Volunteer Service Award, a 2012 Faculty Excellence Award for Service by the college of engineering, and a 2015 Faculty Senate Excellence Award for Service. He has been cited in Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and he has authored more than 200 refereed articles and various chapters to books on oceanography and meteorology, as well as editorials, technical reports, and refereed abstracts.
