Highly educated in the field of metallurgy, Dr. Koch first received a Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and PhD in Metallurgy at Case Institute of Technology in Cleveland between the years of 1959 and 1964. Completing a National Science Foundation fellowship at Birmingham University in England that following year, he then began working in the field as a staff scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He became at group leader in 1970 in the metals and ceramics division until leaving for North Carolina State University in 1983.
Dr. Koch was offered a senior position as a full professor with tenure at North Carolina State University in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. Accepting the opportunity, teaching was never really something that Dr. Koch had considered previously. He was named Kobe Steel distinguished professor in 2008. His research interests include nonequilibrium processing, including rapid solidification, vapor quenching and mechanical alloying, alloying behavior and phase transformations, amorphization and nanoscale structures by mechanical attrition, high melting temperature intermetallic compounds, and high transition temperature oxide superconductors.
Dr. Koch's research has focused on the synthesis, characterization, and properties of metastable materials. Metastable materials with unique structures or microstructures that he has studied include metallic glasses, intermetallic compounds, nanocrystalline materials, and polymer alloys. The chief nonequilibrium processing methods used to prepare metastable materials are rapid solidification from the liquid phase (at about 106 oC/s) and mechanical attrition of powders in high-energy ball mills. He was the first researcher to demonstrate that amorphous alloys (metallic glasses) could be made by ball milling certain elemental powder mixtures by the technique known as mechanical alloying. Recent research has turned to nanocrystalline materials prepared by either mechanical attrition or controlled crystallization of amorphous precursors formed by rapid solidification. His group's interest in these materials is due to their special mechanical and soft magnetic properties.
Dr. Koch is a Fellow of TMS (The Minerals, Metals, and Materials Society) in 2001, which has a maximum of 100 living Fellows. He is also a Fellow of MRS, ASM International, APS, and AAAS. He was named to Who's Who in America in 2011. His greatest honor was being elected into the National Academy of Engineering in 2013.
Initially inspired to pursue a career in science by his friend's father, who was a mining engineer, Dr. Koch has since enjoyed a wonderful career in the field with no regrets. He was married to Evelyn Windridge from 1965 until her passing in 2015. He and Evelyn have two sons. He remarried to Carolyn Tonidandel.
