Retiring from teaching full-time in 2008, Dr. Kane currently holds the title of University Distinguished Professor of Philosophy Emeritus and Professor of Law Emeritus at the University of Texas at Austin. He served the university as a distinguished professor of philosophy from 1995 to 2008, as professor of philosophy from 1985 to 1995 and as associate professor from 1974 to 1985. Additionally, Dr. Kane served at Haverford College in Pennsylvania as the Alfred E Sloan assistant professor of philosophy from 1967 to 1970. He began his career in 1964 as an assistant professor of philosophy at Fordham University in New York.
Dr. Kane graduated from Yale University with a PhD in 1964 and a Master of Arts in 1962. He also received a Bachelor of Arts from Holy Cross College in 1960. He is the author of "Free Will and Values," published in 1985, "Through the Moral Maze," published in 1994, "The Significance of Free Will," published in 1996, "A Contemporary Introduction to Free Will," published in 2005, and "Ethics and the Quest for Wisdom," published in 2010. "The Significance of Free Will" was commended with the R. W. Hamilton Faculty Book Award in 1997. He has also acted as the editor of the first and second editions of "The Oxford Handbook of Free Will," published in 2002 and 2011, respectively. Additionally, he has recorded a series of 24 lectures entitled "The Quest for Meaning: Values, Ethics and the Modern Experience" as part of The Great Courses on Tape series, available for audio download from the website The Teaching Company (Chantilly, Virginia).
Dr. Kane was the recipient of the Quality of Life Award by the National Alliance on Mental Illness in 1993. From 1961 to 1964, he was also honored as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow by Yale University and the Woodrow Wilson Foundation. Additionally, he was named an inaugural member of the Academy of Distinguished Teachers at the University of Texas at Austin. He has also been featured in numerous editions of Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who in the World.
Dr. Kane is the son of Hilary Thomas and Vivian Lenzi Kane. He has been married to Claudette Marcile Drennan for more than 50 years. They have two sons together: Russell Hilary and Nathan Robert.
