In 1978, Dr. Curley graduated from the University of New Mexico with a BS in Biology and Chemistry. He continued his studies at the University of Texas, receiving a MD in 1982. Between 1982 and 1988, Dr. Curley worked as a clinical resident in General Surgery at several University of New Mexico hospitals. Following this period, in 1988, he became a fellow in Surgical Oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Curley is certified by the American Board of Surgery.
From 1988 to 2013, Dr. Curley was a faculty member rising to the rank of Professor of Surgical Oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. During this period, he became the Charles B. Barker Endowed Chair in Surgery at MD Anderson. In 2004 and 2012, he was a volunteer surgeon for Helping Hands International. Since 2006, Dr. Curley has worked as an adjunct professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science at Rice University. Since January 2014, Dr. Curley has been Chief and a Professor of Surgical Oncology for the Baylor College of Medicine.
Since 2015, Dr. Curley has been an Oncology Service Line Medical Director at the CHI St. Luke's Health-Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center. Throughout his career, he was responsible for the development of two FDA-approved devices for invasive thermal ablation needles to treat unresectable liver cancers. He also was a volunteer for the Women's Home, a rehabilitation center for women with drug and alcohol addiction, as well as a coach of several local youth soccer teams.
As an esteemed surgical oncologist, Dr. Curley is a member of various related organizations, including the Society of Surgical Oncology, American College of Surgeons, American Society of Clinical Oncology, Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, and the Southwest Oncology Group. Dr. Curley also maintains memberships in the Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association, American Surgical Association, American Association of Cancer Research, Harris County Medical Society, and Texas Medical Association. In 1992, 2001 and 2011, Dr. Curley received an Outstanding Teacher Award from the Surgical Oncology Fellows of the MD Anderson Cancer Center. Castle Connolly also recognized him among America's Top Doctors for the past 15 years.
In 2001, Dr. Curley received a Patient's Choice Award from America's Most Compassionate Doctors. He also was listed as Best Doctor's of America Database in 2002 and America's Top Doctor's for Cancer Database in 2005. Between 2010 and 2015, Dr. Curley was a recipient of the Patients' Choice Award from America's Most Compassionate Doctors. In 2012, Dr. Curley was the recipient of the Tribecca Disruptive Innovator Award. He was named Top 1% of Physicians by the United States News and World Report, as well.
