Frenkel, MD, MACP, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Frenkel is a well-known and well-respected member of the faculty at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. He is Professor of Medicine and Radiology and Member of the Harold C. Simmons Compressive Cancer Center. He is also the Patsy R. and Raymond D. Nasher Distinguished Chair in Cancer Research. In addition he holds the Elaine Dewey Sammons Distinguished Chair in Cancer Research in Honor of Eugene P. Frenkel, MD, and the A. Kenneth Pye Professorship in Cancer Research. Since 2004 he has been the Director of the T. Boone Pickens Fund for Cancer Research and Treatment Honoring Eugene P. Frenkel, MD.

His early research studies focused on aspects of methionine and cobalamin (vitamin B12) metabolism. His studies on the role of vitamin B12 deficiency on neural function led to the recognition and characterization of its resultant dysmyelinization and secondary neural dysfunction. More recently his focus on breast and genitourinary cancer has led to studies on therapeutic trials and drug resistance.

After completing his undergraduate degree at Wayne State University in 1949 and his MD at the University of Michigan in 1953, he began his residency in Medicine at Wayne County Hospital and then Boston City Hospital.

His training was interrupted by induction into the United States Air Force where he was a flight surgeon with the 3rd Bomb Wing in the Far East; and, was also attached to the 6022 USAF Hospital, Japan. Following his military service he returned to the University of Michigan to complete his Internal Medicine training, which was followed by a fellowship in Hematology-Medical Oncology.

In 1962, he moved to The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School at Dallas, Texas as the Chief of the Division of Hematology-Medical Oncology in the Department of Internal Medicine; and Director of Nuclear Medicine at the Dallas VA Medical Center.

Dr. Frenkel is a diplomat of the American Board of Medical Oncology, the American Board of Hematology, and the American Board of Internal Medicine. He was a member of the Board of Governors of the American Board Internal Medicine for eight years; and, he served as the Chairman of the Subspecialty Committee on Hematology for four years. In addition, he served on the Editorial Board of the Annals of Internal Medicine, the Journal of Clinical Investigation, the Journal of Clinical and Applied Thrombosis/Hemostasis, and the Merck Manual. He was also active with the American Joint Commission on Cancer for nine years, was a consultant on nutrition for the National Institute of Arthritis and Metabolic Diseases for three years, and served on the committee evaluation of research hematology.

Dr. Frenkel is a Master Member of the American College of Physicians. He is a member of the American Association of Clinical Research, American Society of Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians. In addition; he is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Society of Hematology; and, the International Society of Hematology where he was councilor for five years between 1992 and 1997, the Society of Nuclear Medicine, and the American Cancer Society, where he was president of the Dallas chapter for a short time. Highlighted on dozens of editions of Who's Who since 1987, these include Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who in the World.
