A career long educator, researcher, and author, Dr. Steinhoff has been a very well-known teacher and colleague at the University of Hawaii for close to 50 years. Studying Japanese language and literature and sociology in college, she went on to become a Japan specialist who can speak and read the language and has since conducted much of her research over the years on either the Japanese society or Japanese studies in the U.S. She served the University of Hawaii as an assistant professor from 1968 to 1972 and associate professor from 1972 to 1974 before making full professor, a role she holds to this day. From 1986 to 1994 she also served as the director of The Center for Japanese Studies at the University.
Teaching undergraduate and graduate level courses on Japanese society, and a graduate seminar on qualitative content analysis, Dr. Steinhoff also teaches the graduate seminar on classical theory on occasion and, since 1986, has served on the editorial board for the University of Hawaii Press. Previously, she taught Sociology 100 via active learning activities and small group discussions, and participated in a joint seminar on comparative social organization in East Asia. During her career at the university, she has also spent time working with graduate level students in the sociology department, served on and chaired the social science committee on human studies, and advised on human subject procedures.
When Dr. Steinhoff isn't in the classroom, serving as a mentor, or attending seminars, she is conducting qualitative research on Japanese social movements and has conducted large-scale survey projects, including four studies of Japan specialists in the U.S. in Canada. Her research has included social movements in Japan and she remains interested in the Japanese protest cycle of the late 1960s and early 1970s and radical left groups that emerged in that protest cycle and went underground. Earlier in Dr. Steinhoff's career, her studies included extensive research on abortion and women's heath in Hawaii. She has also led some Japanese and English bilingual website projects over the years.
Dr. Steinhoff has co-authored Abortion Politics: The Hawaii Experience in 1977, and authored both Tenko: Ideology and Societal Integration and Japanese Studies in the US in the 1990s Furthermore, she has co-edited Conflict in Japan in 1984, as well as Doing Fieldwork in Japan in 2003. Most recently, she began working on a trilogy on Japan's Red Army groups.
Dr. Steinhoff is an active member of the American Sociological Association, and the Association for Asian Studies. She also served as a panel member of the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission and the U.S.-Japan Conference on Cultural and Educational Interchange from 2001-2006.
Completing a Bachelor of Arts in Japanese Language and Literature with honors at the University of Michigan in 1963 and a PhD in Sociology at Harvard University in 1969, Dr. Steinhoff was later the recipient of several Fulbright senior research fellowships granted by the Fulbright Commission. Dr. Steinhoff was further recognized as a Guggenheim research fellow by the Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation.
Named to Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the West, and Who's Who of American Women, Dr. Steinhoff has been married to William David Steinhoff since 1968 and has two children. One of her biggest hobbies, hand weaving, spun into a weaving blog at www.wanderingweaver.wordpress.com. She shows her weavings in juried shows as part of Hawaii Handweavers Hui and Hawaii Craftsmen. She has served as president and workshop chair for the Hawaii Handweavers Hui.
