Harold J. Wanebo, MD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Wanebo, MD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. As emeritus Professor of Surgery in the surgical oncology section at Roger Williams Medical Center, an affiliate of Boston University School of Medicine, Dr. Wanebo spent many years as a surgical oncologist teaching trainees and conducting cancer research. He completed internship and medical residency with the Cornell Medical Division at Bellevue Hospital in New York in 1963 followed by general surgical residency at the University of California San Francisco in 1969. He subsequently accepted a tumor immunology fellowship at Sloan Kettering Cancer Center where he would spend the next decade surgically treating cancer patients and conducting basic and clinical research. Dr. Wanebo rose through the ranks from surgical fellow and associate scientist to consultant on the surgical oncology and immunology service at this premiere institution.

Dr. Wanebo served at an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Cornell University Medical Center from 1973 to 1977 and next became a full Professor of Surgery and Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology at the University of Virginia Medical Center from 1977 to 1987. His career continued at Brown University in 1987 as a Professor and Chairman of Surgery at Roger Williams Medical Center. He completed his academic career with Boston University, also affiliated with Roger Williams Medical Center.

Through his academic pursuits, Dr. Wanebo delivered over 500 presentations and authored 290 peer reviewed journal articles. He published 75 chapters and 5 books including those on surgical oncology, hepatobiliary surgery, colorectal surgery and gastrointestinal cancer management and pelvic malignancy surgery. He served as editor or on the editorial board of multiple peer-review journals including the Annals of Surgical Oncology and Head and Neck Surgery. He has been affiliated with over 20 professional organizations throughout his academic career including the American College of Surgeons, the American Association for Cancer Research, the New England Surgical Society, the Society of Surgical Oncology, the American Surgical Association, the Association of Clinical Oncology and the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons.

After completing surgical residency, Dr. Wanebo served two years in Vietnam as a Major in the US Army and for his meritorious service and bravery was decorated with a Bronze Star Medal and the Commendation Medal with Valor. He holds a BS in Chemistry from Regis College and earned his MD from the University of Colorado in 1961. He was the recipient of a Junior Faculty Clinical Fellowship Award from the American Cancer Society from 1974 to 1977 and was honored as a distinguished graduate from the University of Colorado in 2007. He has been highlighted in many Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Education and Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare. He has been married to Claire Anne Cookson Wanebo, a former Bellevue nurse (Bellevue Hospital, NYC), since 1964 and is the proud father of three children including a daughter who is a pediatrician and two sons, one a former Naval Nuclear engineer now in industry, the other a neurosurgeon.
