Now retired from a successful career as a federal agency administrator, Dr. Vigil has returned to his passion for botany, horticulture, medicine and science literature as the proprietor of Antiquariat Botanicum. He maintains an impressive library of rare antiquarian books and manuscripts from and for international sale, from the 16th to 20th century. The collection reflects Dr. Vigil's knowledge in botany, cell biology, and biomedical science gleaned from over 50 years of academic and administrative research and experience. Many of the volumes contain major critical advancements in these areas.
Born to Marcelo Raymond and Anna Vigil in Chicago, IL, Dr. Vigil's training included study at Loyola University Chicago and the University of Iowa. He first encountered the National Institutes of Health as a NIH postdoctoral fellowship awardee for research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His passion for cytochemical research of botanical tissues and cells, first ignited there, significantly advanced details of plant cell organization. Dr. Vigil served from 1969-1971 with the University of Chicago as a public health trainee and Danforth tutor where he achieved further recognition for pioneering cytochemical research on cell organelle functions. His pioneering cytochemical research from 1967-1975 demonstrated the existence of a new constituent organelle for all higher plant and mammalian cells. This significant discovery cleared the way for better understanding of cellular function between organelles in plant and animal cells.
In the '70s, Dr. Vigil joined Marquette University for eight years as an assistant professor, and in 1979 joined the Botany faculty at the University of Maryland to continue his botanical research and teaching. In 1988, Dr. Vigil was appointed plant physiologist with the Agricultural Research Service in Beltsville, MD of the United States Department of Agriculture. Here he led a national team in discovering how cotton plants can adapt to moderate water stress and produce viable seed and useful fiber; for this research, he actively sought out under-represented minorities and women students to assist him. He served until 1995, when he accepted an appointment as a Program Director for the National Institutes of Health. In 2001, Dr. Vigil retired from his administration position to focus on his original interest, the advancement of botanical science.
Today, Antiquariat Botanicum offers many books on botany, evolution, natural history and other areas of science and medicine, many of them collected by Dr. Vigil on his domestic and international travels. The bookseller is a member of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America and the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers. He has a keen interest in history of science, complemented by his inventory of books, manuscripts in original languages and significant articles by eminent scientists. These diverse offerings are very desirable to collectors and institutions.
Dr. Vigil's research focused mainly on "Botanical Cytochemistry," an area in which he published numerous original articles, reviews from scientific symposia or chapters in reference publications. He has been recognized for his skill in the fields of botany, cell biology, and cytochemistry and has been supported by grants and fellowships from the National Institutes of Health, the University of Iowa, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, NATO, and the National Science Foundation.
Dr. Vigil is a past president of Rotary International Club, Beltsville, MD, and a distinguished speaker before domestic and international scientific groups. He is also a Life Member of The Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics & Native Americans in Science.
For his continued dedication to the cause of plant science, Dr. Vigil was selected for inclusion in six volumes of Who's Who in America from 2000 to 2005, as well as the 1999 to 2000 volume of Who's Who in the East, and mention in Hispanics Who's Who. He is the father of Michael, Jennifer, and Aimee. In his spare time, Dr. Vigil tends to his gardening, when not immersed in reading or studying history of science.
