Former vice president of operations at Gables Engineering in Coral Gables, FL, Mr. Barthel retired from his role in 2008 after first gaining employment with the engineering firm as their director of quality in 1991. Advancing to vice president in 1993, he became a highly-respected employee who valued the same principles upon which the company was founded. Established in 1946, Gables Engineering maintains an international reputation for serving as an industry leader in custom avionics controls and other related products.
Mr. Barthel served in the U.S. Air Force from 1958 to 1962. Graduating from McNeese State University with a Bachelor's degree, he later gained employment with Rockwell International in Cedar Rapids, IA, as an engineer of quality control, manager of quality assurance, and senior engineering scientist of process control development, from 1974 to 1981. The multinational company provides avionics and information technology systems and services to government agencies and aircraft manufacturers. Subsequently, Mr. Barthel spent another 10 years with Digital Equipment Corporation in Andover, MA; first, as an engineering manager of process reliability, and second, as an engineering manager of performance assurance. Thereafter, he was offered a position with Gables Engineering. Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) was a major American company in the computer industry from the 1950s to 1990s. Acquired by Compaq in 1998, which merged with Hewlett-Packard (HP) in 2002, some of DEC's product lines were still produced under the HP name until 2007.
