Drawing upon more than 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Embretson serves as a professor of psychology with the Georgia Institute of Technology. In this position, she has been continually recognized for her programmatic research on integrating cognitive theory into psychometric item response theory models and into the design of measurement tasks. In recognition of her commitment to psychological theory and research, she has received awards from the National Council on Measurement and Education, the American Educational Research Association, and the American Psychological Association and she has served as President of the Psychometric Society and the Society of for Multivariate Experimental Psychology.
Prior to becoming an educator, Dr. Embretson attended the University of Minnesota, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in 1967 and PhD in Psychology in 1973. She went on to serve as a research associate with the Measurement Service Center at the University of Minnesota for one year before joining the University of Kansas as an assistant professor of psychology, where she remained for more than 20 years. She later joined the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2004.
Since the inception of her career, Dr. Embretson has served on a wide range of editorial boards, including Measurement, Psychological Methods, and Applied Psychological Measurement. She has contributed numerous articles and chapters to books pertaining to her areas of expertise and she has authored numerous technical reports and reviews. She has also taught a wide range of subjects, including psychological tests, intelligence and cognition, individual differences, measurement methods, statistics and item response theory.
Dr. Embretson has also been involved in developing and validating tests of aptitude and achievement. Working through Psychological Data Corporation, where she has served as President, she has developed tests for personnel selection in the military, industry and government, as well as tests for achievement in educational settings, In the coming years, she plans continued work on funded projects and test development activities in her area of focus.
