Dr. Hall is Higgins Professor Emeritus of radiation biophysics, as well as special research scientist, and special lecturer in radiation oncology, at the Center for Radiological Research in the College of Physicians and Surgeons at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and Columbia University. Employed with Columbia from 1968 to 2008, he also spent 24 years as a radiation biologist in the radiation oncology service at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital until 2007. For the past nine years, Dr. Hall has continued to serve as Higgins Professor Emeritus and Special Lecturer in Radiation Oncology at Columbia University Medical Center.
Throughout his career, Dr. Hall has concentrated on two principal objectives, both of which require an understanding of the basic biology of the interaction of radiation with living cells. These include research into mechanisms of the carcinogenic and mutagenic effects of low doses of radiation and research in support of radiation therapy. The first objective is aimed toward understanding the deleterious effects of low doses of radiation. The second objective is directed toward improvements in the use of radiotherapy for the treatment of cancer.
Early in his career, Dr. Hall worked at Churchill Hospital for the Oxford Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Hired in 1955 as an assistant physicist, he later moved into the role of senior physicist and principal physicist until 1968. The results of Dr. Hall's research throughout his career have been documented in six books in which he authored/co-authored, including "Radiobiology for the Radiologist." Now in its seventh edition in 2012, it was then released as a Chinese edition in 2013. He has also authored close to 400 articles in professional journals such as the British Journal of Radiology, Radiation Oncology, and the Journal of Radiological Protection, in addition to serving on numerous editorial boards and as associate and senior editor for several journals.
Dr. Hall was active on numerous committees during his tenure as well, including the Radiobiology Committee to NASA, the National Academy of Sciences, and the National Cancer Institute. An elected fellow of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology and member of their long-range planning committee since 1986, Dr. Hall is also a fellow of the American College of Radiology, the Royal College of Radiology, and the Society of Radiological Protection. He is an honorary member of several organizations such as the Society of Radiological Protection, the Royal College of Radiologists, and the American College of Radiology, and is a longstanding member of numerous other organizations where he has served in various roles, including the Radiation Research Society, the American Radium Society Inc., and the British Institute of Radiology.
Upon completing a Bachelor of Science in Physics with honors from the University College in London and a DPhil in Radiobiology from Oxford University, Dr. Hall received an MA and DSc from Oxford University. He has been the recipient of countless other awards as well, most recently including a Distinguished Service Award from both the Radiation Research Society in 2012 and Columbia University Medical Center in 2009, a Gold Medal from the American College of Radiology in 2008 and the American Roentgen Ray Society in 2008, The Gray Medal of the International Commission on Radiological Units in 2007, and a Distinguished Scientific Achievement Award from the Health Physics Society in 2005. Married with one son, Dr. Hall has been cited in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and Who's Who in the East several times.
