Dr. Densley is the owner and founder of the Violence Project, LLC, which provides a variety of services in the criminal justice field. He has provided his expertise to the Metropolitan State University of Minnesota School of Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice as an associate professor of criminal justice since 2015. He also served as an assistant professor from 2011 to 2015 for the school. Prior to that, he was an adjunct professor for the Fort Hays State University Department of Sociology and Social Work from 2005 to 2011, and was a visiting tutor for the Department of Social Sciences at Ruskin College in 2007 and 2008, as well as a special education coordinator for the New York City Department of Education from 2005 to 2007.
Dr. Densley obtained a BA in Sociology from the University of Northampton in 2003 before continuing on to the University of Oxford for his MSc in Sociology in 2004. He earned an MS in Teaching at Pace University in 2007, and a PhD in Sociology from the University of Oxford in 2011. While at Oxford, he also served as a graduate teaching and research assistant for the Department of Sociology in 2007 and 2008. He was certified by the University of the State of New York in 2008 in Middle Childhood Education and Students with Disabilities, and by the State of Minnesota Department of Education in Learning Disabilities and Developmental Disabilities in 2011.
Dr. Densley is affiliated with the American Society of Criminology, and the Eurogang Research Program. He is the author of the book, How Gangs Work, which featured the first application of economic signaling theory to street gang life. Additionally, his work has been featured in Journal of Research in Crime and Delinquency, Justice Quarterly, Social Problems, and The Wall Street Journal.
He has authored and co-authored several works, which include "a signaling perspective on disengagement from gangs," "epidemiology of penetrating injuries in the United Kingdom" and "ethnic heterogeneity in the activity and structure of a black street gang." He has also been recognized on many occasions for his work in the field, earning such awards as the Points of Light Award for Outstanding Individual Volunteers from the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, and the Frederick Milton Thrasher Award for Superior Accomplishments in Gang Research through the National Gang Crime Research Center.
