Beginning his career as a student of the Community College of Allegheny County, Dr. Howell received an AS in Physics in 1976. Continuing his studies at Mount Union College, Dr. Howell graduated with a BS in Astrophysics in 1978. Upon completing his undergraduate education, Dr. Howell enrolled as a student of Pennsylvania State University, and in 1980, earned an MS in Astronomy. Subsequently, Dr. Howell was accepted to the University of Toledo, thus receiving an MS in Physics in 1982. Following his graduation, Dr. Howell was employed as a postdoctoral scientist at GM Physics Laboratory from 1982 to 1983. In 1983, he joined the team at the renowned Kitt Peak National Observatory.
With two years of experience to his credit, Dr. Howell was hired by the NASA Goddard Space Center as a research scientist, a position he remained in from 1986 to 1988. Following this period, Dr. Howell worked as a research scientist at the Planetary Science Institute from 1988 to 1996. While working at this institute, he resumed his studies at the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands, graduating with a PhD in Astrophysics in 1995. Returning to the United States, Dr. Howell has worked as a professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Wyoming and the University of California. He currently works as head of space science and astrobiology for NASA. His achievements have included the development of digital imaging techniques enabling high-precision photometric measurements of faint astronomical sources, as well as being one of the project scientists for the Kepler exoplanet discovery mission. Dr. Howell discovered a new class of faint interacting binaries termed TOADs.
As an astrophysicist and educator, Dr. Howell is a member of various professional circles, including the American Astronomical Society, the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, and the International Astronomical Union. Dr. Howell has written over 900 scientific publications, numerous popular and technical articles, and has authored and edited eight books on astronomy and astronomical instrumentation. Combining the latest scientific discoveries about exoplanets, fundamental physics principles, and modern food chemistry has led Dr. Howell to develop a series of educational, highly entertaining scientific and public outreach presentations on the physics of food, including their use at the Harvard cooking school. He has edited and written two science fiction books related to exoplanet science. Dr. Howell is highly involved with informal and formal scientific education for kids to adults.
The son of Cecil George and Barbara Ann (Farrar) Howell, Dr. Howell lives in the Bay Area and has two sons, Jesse and Graham.
