A professor of pediatrics at Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) and former medical director of neonatal-perinatal medicine at the Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters, Dr. Oelberg formerly served as interim chair at EVMS from 2001 to 2002. He is board certified in pediatrics and neonatal-perinatal medicine, and has been in practice for nearly 40 years. First hired at the University of Texas Medical School as an assistant professor in the department of pediatrics, he later accepted his first position at EVMS in 1993. The Children's Hospital is leading the region in children's healthcare services through the advancement of science, educating the next generation of leaders in children's health, and serving as the healthcare provider of choice in the Norfolk area.
In addition to teaching and directing at EVMS, Dr. Oelberg was president of the medical staff at Sentara-Norfolk General Hospital. He formerly spent time as a member of the Hermann Hospital staff in Houston, TX, and the Lyndon B. Johnson County Hospital, was a physician with the Crippled Children's Service Program, and was a visiting professor at Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories, a pharmaceutical company that has since been purchased by Pfizer.
Some of Dr. Oelberg's achievements in the field have included the development of a method for optical measurement of bilirubin in tissue and ion channel proteins in pulmonary surfactant. He has also maintained a longtime interest in salt water transport by lung epithelia, and patented a noninvasive, diagnostic devices employment light. His research has led him to contribute articles in various academic journals, he has served on the editorial advisory board for the "Neonatal Intensive Care" journal, and served as an ad hoc review for several other professional journals.
Dr. Oelberg earned his undergraduate degree at the College of William and Mary with highest honors, followed by an MD at the University of Maryland. After completing his internship and residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston from 1978 to 1981, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship in neonatal medicine at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston from 1981 to 1984.
Lending his expertise to the community, Dr. Oelberg is a former physician consultant for the Parents of Victims of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, former chairman of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, former board member of the Fund for William Mary and UMVIM, as well as a missionary to Haiti, Nicaragua, and Bolivia.
Dr. Oelberg was the recipient of numerous research grants from institutions like the American Chemical Society, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, and the American Lung Association. He received a Clinical Investigator Award by the National Institutes of Health, a Founders Award from SSPR, and has been highlighted in every edition of Who's Who in America since 1998, as well as many editions of Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and Who's Who in Science and Engineering. Furthermore, he is an elected fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the New York Academy of Sciences and a longtime member of the American Medical Association and the Society of Experimental Biology and Medicine. Dr. Oelberg is married and has two children.
