Researcher, professor of agronomy-pesticide chemistry, and Head of the Department of Plant Sciences at the University of Tennessee (UT) Institute Of Agriculture since 2013, Dr. Senseman formerly taught at Texas A&M University for 19 years in the Department of Soil and Crop Sciences.
During this time, he spent his time teaching in the classroom and conducting research in a pesticide fate laboratory; specifically, in matters related to pesticides, metabolism, and herbicides. Some of the courses he has taught over the years to undergraduate and graduate students have included Introduction to Agronomy, Weed Ecology and Management, Herbicide Mode of Action and Environment Fate, and Methods of Plant, Soil, and Water Analysis in Environmental Systems. Eager to be a part of a successful program at UT, Dr. Senseman's mission was to foster growth and be recognized as an innovative and leading source for information and technologies in agronomy, horticulture, plant biology, and landscape design.
Recognized for his leadership in academia, Dr. Senseman has been the recipient of an Outstanding Educator Award by the Weed Science Society, an Alumni Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Education by Wilmington College, Ohio, and an Award in Teaching by the Association of Former Students at Texas A&M University. He also received numerous awards for his research, including a Crop Protection Recognition Award from Novartis. Additionally, he was named Outstanding Young Weed Scientist by the Weed Society of America, received several paper and service awards for his work, and was a visiting professor fellow of CAPES in Brazil.
Dr. Senseman received a BS in Agribusiness at Wilmington College of Ohio and an MS in Agronomy and PhD in Agronomy from the University of Arkansas. After earning his Bachelor's degree, he interned with Monsanto in Reynoldsburg, OH. Dr. Senseman worked as a graduate assistant and research assistant at the University of Arkansas from 1986 to 1994, before accepting his first teaching appointment at Texas A&M University. Dr. Senseman has contributed numerous articles to professional journals and maintains memberships with the American Society of Agronomy, the American Chemical Society, and the Crop Science Society of America. He additionally served as president-elect of the Weed Science Society of America Southern. Married for 23 years, he has been highlighted in Who's Who in America and Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
