A licensed psychotherapist, Dr. Soper is a research scientist and neuropsychologist who has been practicing at the University of California's Neuropsychiatric and Brain Research Institute programs at Camarillo State Hospital from 1982 to 1986. Formerly directing the clinical neuropsychology internship program at the hospital from 1985 to 1995 as well. His past and present research includes investigations into cognitive hemispheric specialization and the bases of different forms of intellectual functioning.
Dr. Soper completed his undergraduate studies at Yale University in 1966, where he was also on the rugby and varsity football teams, followed by a Master of Art. While pursuing his Master's degree, he studied brain behavior interaction and speech pathways in monkeys, which was the untapped potential of psychology and neurobiology that drew him to the field. By 1974, he had completed a PhD in Physiological and Comparative Psychology at the University of Connecticut and had begun working at the Brain Research Institute at UCLA. Two years later, he was a National Institutes of Health fellow in the department of psychology.
In 1978, Dr. Soper began teaching at California State University and worked as a neuroanatomist and clinical psychologist at the University of Illinois. Dr. Soper also served as doctoral faculty in the school of psychology at Fielding Graduate University in Santa Barbara, CA, where he was known for designing an APA-accredited program as the director of the neuropsychology concentration. His objective was to train students to become proficient journeyman neuropsychologists and to give them the essential tools and knowledge to practice independently and effectively.
An elected fellow of the National Academy of Neuropsychology and the Psychonomic Science, Dr. Soper is a longstanding member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the International Primatology Society, the American Association of Primatologists, the New York Academy of Science, and the American Psychological Association. He has authored over 150 scientific articles in professional publications throughout the course of his career in the basic and clinical neurosciences, has held several National Institutes of Health and other research fellowships. Furthermore, he was the recipient of a Robert R. Chamberlain Award and a Normal Hall Award, and has been highlighted in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the West, and Who's Who in the World. Dr. Soper also received a Decorated Bronze Star for his time served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam as a first lieutenant from 1966 to 1968.
