Mr. Glass is a distinguished former chief financial officer of The Gillette Company in Boston, where he served for 41 years. He is well known for preserving the legacy safety razor and personal care manufacturing company against two hostile takeover attempts, and of convincing shareholders to invest with the company's long-term growth as opposed to selling its assets for immediate profits. Mr. Glass was cited in "Resisting Hostile Takeovers: The Case of Gillette" as a "solid, hardworking guy, a ramrod as a CFO." Together with his wife, Glass supports numerous charitable organizations, and notably founded the educational, non-profit, 501(c)(3) corporation, the Jaw Joints & Allied Musculo-Skeletal Disorders Foundation (JJAMD), Inc. with his wife, Renee, to promote and encourage multi-disciplinary research and provide comprehensive multi-disciplinary medical and dental public and professional education of the importance of healthy temporomandibular joints (TMJ) in total body health. Mr. Glass and Mrs. Glass' pro-bono missions are multifaceted, but their overarching passion has been to prevent needless pain and suffering from lack of proper communication and public education.
Born in Burlington, Vermont, to Joseph and Mary Lena Glass in 1929, Mr. Glass earned a degree in accounting from Bentley College in Waltham, Massachusetts and served with the U.S. Army from 1948 to 1951. He was with the Headquarters First Army on Governor's Island, New York and awarded the coveted top secret Q Clearance for unquestionable loyalty. Mr. Glass was recommended for officer's training at West Point, New York, but chose an honorable discharge. He later served with the Federal Emergency Management Agency as a Brigadier General Officer of the Executive Reserved Corps for seven years.
Mr. Glass joined Gillette as a part time assistant timekeeper in 1952 while working for eight years, nights and summers, to earn a Bachelor's degree in business administration from Northeastern University. In 1956, he completed a Master's degree and rose through the ranks of Gillette. In 1962, Mr. Glass was sent by senior management to attend the prestigious Harvard University Business School PMD-3, an immersive management development program dedicated using case studies to advance skills in ethics, leadership, decision-making and conflict resolution in a changing global society. From 1974 to 1993, he was given the responsibility for investor relations at Gillette, and was named 1986 America's Best Chief Finance Officer in the Cosmetics Industry, Best Investor Relations Contact for multiple years, and America's Most Admired CFO by Institutional Investor for his role in the hostile takeover negotiations. Mr. Glass was called a "Gentle Persuader" by Boston Business Journal, and served for many years as a treasurer and assistant controller for Gillette.
In the '60s, Mr. Glass concurrently became a director of the board with Blue Cross and Blue Shield Massachusetts, serving as its chairman for 10 years. He currently holds the role of chair emeritus there, and worked closely with Senator Edward M. Kennedy to improve health care legislation. Mr. Glass has accrued a number of charitable leadership board memberships and chairmanships with the Forsyth Dental Research Institute, the Harvard University Medical and Dental School, the International Business Center in New England, Medical Diagnostics Company, the nonprofit United Way of Massachusetts, the Arthur D. Little Management Education Institute, Elderhostel, and the Health and Policy Institute. His work with JJAMD is pro bono, and his Foundation hosts educational symposiums, funds research, and works with the National Institutes of Health to eradicate the debilitating condition.
Mr. Glass has taught as an adjunct professor of finance and executive in residence with Northeastern University, and has volunteered and served on the board with civic groups in the Massachusetts area, including the Boston Lyric Opera, the Metropolitan Opera, the Boston Public Library, the American Repertory Theater, the Boch Center for the Performing Arts, the Friends of the Mashpee Indian Museum, and the Mashpee Music Festival, where he is a founding board member with Mrs. Glass.
As Chairman of the Mashpee School Committee, Mr. Glass called on the Educational Research Council and Senator Edward M. Kennedy, Senator Edward Brooke, and U.S. Congressman Gerry Studds to convene to host a symposium to help local residents learn for themselves the complexities of the landmark Wampanoag Indian Land claim suit.
For his incredible philanthropic efforts, Mr. Glass, along with Mrs. Glass, was honored with a Lifetime Commitment to Community Service dinner by B'nai Brith International. Proclamations to install Jaw Joints-TMJ Awareness Month in perpetuity were introduced into the U.S. Congress by the Honorable Barney Frank, and Massachusetts State Legislature by Governor William Weld. Mr. Glass was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in Finance and Industry. He married his wife Renee in 1950, with whom he had two children, Jill Sharlene and Mikel Lewis. They have three grandchildren--Zachery, Rebecca, and Elias.
