Architect and director of the Stuckeman Center for Design Computing at The Pennsylvania State University for the past two years, Dr. Duarte brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise with him to the university. Upon completing a PhD in Architectural Design and Computation at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Dr. Duarte returned to his native Portugal to assist in launching groundbreaking, technology-oriented architecture degrees and programs in two different universities, as well as a digital prototyping and fabrication lab.
After training in Lisbon, Portugal, with two different architectural firms, Dr. Duarte went on to work in the field as an architect for the Manuel Tainha Office for three years, and for the Carlos S. Lameiro Office for one year, in Lisbon, Portugal. He subsequently spent time as a research trainee for the National Laboratory of Civil Engineering in Lisbon before becoming a teaching assistant in the department of architecture and lecturer at MIT. Returning to Lisbon in 2000, Dr. Duarte began lecturing in the department of architecture and civil engineering at the Instituto Superior Tecnicoo, University of Lisbon, before becoming an assistant and full professor in 2010, and dean of the Technical University of Lisbon School of Architecture. He continues to serve as a visiting professor today.
Dr. Duarte has served as president of the Education and Research in Computer-Aided Architectural Design in Europe (eCAADe), an association devoted to education and research in computer-aided architectural design. He also helped establish the MIT-Portugal program and created the design and computation research group, which maintains a strong record of interdisciplinary and collaborative research efforts funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology and private companies. Throughout his career, he has also served on various committees, and continues to serve as a member of the eCAADe, Brussels, since 2002, as founder of head ISTAR-IST Architecture Research Laboratories since 2001, and as a member of the governing board for the program in architecture with Technical University of Lisbon since 2002. Notably, Dr. Duarte was the founder and CEO of FlexSystems from 2004 to 2006, and worked as a freelance architect for 14 years from 1990 to 2004.
Dr. Duarte has authored and co-authored several books, including "Customizing Mass Housing: A Discursive Grammar for Siza's Malagueira Houses" in 2006, and "Type and Module: an approach to the housing production process" in 1995. He also worked as an editor several times and has contributed chapters to books.
A member of the Portuguese Architects Association, where he served on the architecture schools accreditation board from 2004 to 2005, and the Association Promotion and Development of Information Society, Dr. Duarte has been honored several times in his field. More recently, he received a 2nd Prize Award by NASA for a Mars 3D Printed Habitat Challenge in 2017 and a 1st Prize Award in the field of architecture by Technical University of Lisbon in 2008. Prior to earning his doctorate degree, Dr. Duarte completed a Licenciatura em Arquitectura from Technical University of Lisbon in 1987, MS in Architectural Studies/Design Enquiry from MIT in 1993, and Habilitation in Architecture from Technical University of Lisbon in 2008. He also became a certified architect by the Portuguese Architects Association. Married to Maria Rita Castro since 2001, Dr. Duarte has one child and several step-children.
