First earning his undergraduate degree with honors in 1975, Mr. Siegel later received a Master of Business Administration in Finance at the Booth School of Business in 1977.
Boasting an extensive background that includes 15 years of experience at Ibbotson Associates, Inc., first as a consultant and economist before working his way up to managing director, Mr. Siegel later worked for The Ford Foundation as director of research for another 15 years. Starting in 2005, he has been director of research for the CFA Institute Research Foundation, a non-profit organization that sponsors independent, in-depth research on current issues important to investors and investment professionals around the world.
As a speaker, Mr. Siegel has lectured at various institutions, including Cambridge University's Judge School of Business, Dartmouth College's Amos Tuck School of Business Administration, Harvard University, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Sloan School of Management, speaking on topics like "The Global Stock Market Explosion," "The Dimensions of Active Management," and "The Seven Secrets of Endowment Success." Mr. Siegel has also spoken at corporate events both nationally and internationally, and has participated in many academic and professional conferences.
Mr. Siegel has also written extensively, authoring the 2003 book "Benchmarks and Investment Management," editing six books by other authors, and contributing dozens upon dozens of articles in professional journals. He has served on various editorial boards, including the board of the Journal of Portfolio Management since 1986. He has served on investment committees, board of directors and advisory boards, which currently include Advanced Portfolio Management, the Foundation Financial Officers Group, and the Q Group - Institute for Quantitative Research in Finance.
A four-time recipient of a Graham and Dodd Award of Excellence by the Financial Analysts Journal in 1984, 2004, 2006 and 2015, the award recognized Mr. Siegel for excellence in research and financial writing. He also earned a Hirtle Callaghan Award for Investment Leadership in 2009, was named Foundation Investment Officer of the Year by Institutional Investor's Foundation and Endowment Money Management in 2003, and a Bernstein Fabozzi/Jacobs Levy Award for Best Article in the Journal of Portfolio Management in 2006, and Outstanding Article in 2008. He received the first ever EDHEC-Robeco Journal of Portfolio Management Prize in 2009.
Mr. Siegel also has a scholarship named in his honor at his alma mater, the Larry and Connie Siegel Odyssey Scholarship.
