At the start of her career, she joined The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine faculty as an instructor in oncology and medicine in 1975, and then served subsequently as an assistant professor and associate professor. In 1990, she was recruited to the National Institutes of Health where she served as special assistant to the director at the National Cancer Institute and assistant director for applied science. She returned to academia in 1996 as Professor of Medicine, Director of the Leukemia Program, and Associate Director for Clinical Research at the University of Maryland Greenebaum Cancer Center. In 2002, she returned to the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins as Professor of Oncology and Medicine and Director of the Leukemia program. She became professor emerita, oncology and medicine, The Johns Hopkins University's School of Medicine, in 2013.
An alumna of Mills College and the prestigious Stanford University, Dr. Karp holds a Bachelor of Arts and an MD. Throughout the years, she continues to be affiliated with a variety of professional societies, including the American Association for Cancer Research, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the American Society of Hematolog. Dr. Karp continues to publish actively on clinical-translational research in poor-risk adult acute leukemias, with 275 peer-reviewed articles in high-impact journals, 35 book chapters, and 2 textbooks. Additionally, she has been recognized numerous times for her work in the field, earning a Director's Award and a Special Achievement Award through the National Institutes of Health, features in Best Doctors in America every year since 2009, and numerous awards from the Leuekmia Lymphoma Society of America including the John J. Kenney Award and the Spiral of Life Achievement Award. Dr. Karp remains actively involved with diverse aspects of leukemia translational research including clinical trials design and analysis, and mentorship of young oncologists.
