Having held the title of research professor of chemistry emeritus at Western Kentucky University since 2005, Dr. Slocum served the university for 27 years, previously as a professor of chemistry from 1995 to 2005 as well as head of the Department of Chemistry from 1990 to 1995. Before holding those positions, he served as a program leader of the Division of Education Programs at the Argonne National Laboratory from 1985 to 1990. He was also the program director of the Chemical Dynamics Section of the Chemistry Division of the National Science Foundation in Washington, D.C. from 1984 to 1985.
Serving in academia as an adjunct professor of Southern Illinois University from 1981 to 1984, Dr. Slocum has also served as professor of that same institution from 1972 to 1981, as well as an assistant, and subsequently, associate professor of chemistry from 1965 to 1972. He also served as an assistant professor of chemistry at the Carnegie Institute of Technology, now known as Carnegie Mellon University, from 1964 to 1965. Additionally, Dr. Slocum was a senior scientist at the Gulf Research and Development Company from 1980 to 1982, and postdoctoral research associate at Duke University from 1963 to 1964. He began his career as a research chemist at American Cyanamid Company in 1956.
Dr. Slocum also contributed to his field as a senior scientist at the Gulf Research and Development Company from 1980 to 1982. He served as a visiting professor at multiple institutions, including the University of Illinois in 1970, the University of Bristol in 1973, and the University of Cincinnati in 1976. He was a visiting fellow at the University of Bristol in 1972, a visiting lecturer at Carnegie-Mellon University from 1983 to 1984, and the University of Pittsburgh from 1983 to 1984. He also organized symposia on organometallic chemistry and catalysis. He was a board director of the Central States Universities, Inc. from 1986 to 1988 and at Arts at Argonne from 1988 to 1990.
Dr. Slocum was a member of the national organizing committee of the XV International Conference on Organometallic Chemistry in Warsaw in 1992. He also served as a member of the National Science Foundation's Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research subcommittee from 1993 to 1994, and as a member of the council on undergraduate research at the Institutional Liaison Representative for West Kentucky University from 1995 to 2005. He is also a member of the Chemical Society of Great Britain, the Catalysis Society, the Bowling Green Chamber Singers, and Sigma Xi.
Dr. Slocum received a PhD in Chemistry from New York University in 1963 and graduated from the University of Rochester in 1956 with a Bachelor of Arts in English and a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. He is the co-editor of the American Chemical Society's Advances in Chemistry Series, published in 1992, and Methane and Alkane Activation (Phenum), published in 1995. He has also been a member of the editorial board of Synthesis and Reactivity in Inorganic, Metal-Organic and Nano-Metal Chemistry since 1971, and Natural Products Research since 2006.
Dr. Slocum has also contributed over 85 articles to professional journals, chapters in books, and he has served as a consultant in his field. He served the American Chemical Society in various capacities, including in the role of secretary general elect of the catalysis and surface science secretariat, secretary general, organic division representative to the catalysis and surface science secretariat, and co-chairman of the symposium. He has served as the regional editor of Letters in Organic Chemistry from 2004 to 2005, and a member of the editorial board since then. He has also been on the advisory board of Synthetron Industries since 2009 and the advisory board of Proteat Technologies since 2014.
Dr. Slocum has received numerous awards and commendations for his contributions to his field. In 1999, he was commended with the Science Award Honoring Brian Andreen from the Cottrell College of Science. He also received the Research and Creativity Award by the Ogden College of Science and Engineering at Western Kentucky University in 1996. He is featured in numerous editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the Midwest, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who in the World. Dr. Slocum has two children, Warren and Matthew, with his second wife, Laurel Hopper, now deceased. In his spare time, he enjoys music, literature, and sports.
