Dr. Hilton began his studies at San Jose State University, where he graduated with a BA in 1970. He continued his education at the University of Oregon, receiving a MA in American Studies in 1977. He then earned a MAT from National Louis University in 1986, which he immediately followed with a middle school teaching position in Lincolnwood, IL, a suburb of Chicago, from 1986 to 1991. In 1992 he was hired as Director of the Reading Clinic at Saint Xavier University, and he began teaching graduates and undergrads as an instructor.
Dr. Hilton obtained a PhD from the University of Illinois in 2004, and he was promoted to the position of associate professor at the Saint Xavier University that same year, where he remains to this day. Throughout his career, he has appeared as a presenter at a variety of education-related conferences, including the American Educational Research Association National Conference, the Association for the Advancement of Curriculum National Conference, and the Association for Middle Level Education. His experience has ranged from state-wide conferences, such as the Illinois Reading Council Conference, to international conventions, such as the International Reading Association National Convention.
Dr. Hilton wrote a chapter titled 'A Pathway Toward Curriculum' in "Pedagogies of the Imagination: Mythopoetic Curriculum in Educational Practice" in 2008. The following year, he contributed to "Sage's Encyclopedia of Curriculum," and he wrote for a guide to curriculum in education titled, "Subject Matter as Experience" in 2015. He also has contributed to the Journal of Curriculum Theorizing: Curriculum and Pedagogy National Conference. Dr. Hilton is a member of various related organizations, including the American Educational Research Association and International Literacy Association.
