Prior to joining FIU, he was an assistant professor with the Universidad del Turabo from 2006 to 2011, as well as a researcher for the school's Puerto Rico Energy Center in 2010, and a research assistant for the University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez Campus College of Engineering from 2004 to 2006. He worked with Hewlett Packard Enterprise Development LP in Palo Alto, CA as a researcher in 2004. Prior to coming to the United States, he lectured in the Universidad Escuela Colombiana de Carreras Industriales Department of Computer Science and Engineering in 2003 in Bogota, Colombia.
Dr. Chaparro-Baquero obtained his BS in Electrical Engineering from Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogota in 2002, having, also been an electronic engineer with the school from 1999 to 2002. He went on to earn his MS in Computer Engineering from the University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez Campus in 2006, and a PhD in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Florida International University earlier this year.
Dr. Chaparro-Baquero's research on real-time computing, embedded systems, and related topics have been published by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and numerous other professional journals. He is a member of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the Delta Epsilon Iota Academic Honor Society, the Golden Key International Honour Society, and the Computer Society at IEEE. He has received numerous awards and commendations for his outstanding contributions to his industry, including the 2009 Most Collaborative Professor Award by the Universidad del Turabo Chapter in association with IEEE. He was also the recipient of the National Award for Technology Innovation by the Universidad Nacional de Colombia in 2003 and received an honorable mention for Best Engineering Graduate Project by the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in 2002.
