Dr. Chowdhuri is a retired electrical engineer and educator originally from Calcutta, India. He began building his own academic foundation in India, graduating with honors from Calcutta University in 1945 with a Bachelor of Science in physics. In 1948, he received a Master of Science from the same school. After relocating to the United States in 1949, Dr. Chowdhuri obtained a second master's degree from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1951. Later in his career, he earned a Doctor of Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1966.
One of Dr. Chowdhuri's earliest professional positions was as a junior engineer in the lightning arresters section of Westinghouse Electrical Corporation in East Pittsburgh, Pa. In 1952, he relocated to Switzerland to become an electrical engineer in the high voltage laboratory of Maschinenfabrik Oerlikon in Zurich. Dr. Chowdhuri also spent three years as a research engineer for the High Voltage Research Commission before returning to the United States in 1956. Over the next couple of decades, his roles included development engineer in the high voltage laboratory for GE in Pittsfield, Mass., electrical engineer in the research and development center for GE in Schenectady, N.Y., and electrical engineer in the investigations transportation systems division of GE in Erie, Pa. During his time in Erie, he also lectured at The Pennsylvania State University.
Dr. Chowdhuri left GE in 1975 to become a staff member at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. After 11 years, he decided to pursue a path in academia as a professor of electrical engineering at Tennessee Technological University. Dr. Chowdhuri remained at the school until his retirement, earning the title of emeritus professor.
A fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Dr. Chowdhuri remained current in his field through affiliations with IEEE, the Institution of Engineering and Technology, and the New York Academy of Sciences. He holds a number of patents in his industry as well. Further, Dr. Chowdhuri authored the second edition of "Electromagnetic Transients in Power Systems," published in 2004.
Dr. Chowdhuri's accomplishments were taken into consideration when he was chosen to be featured in the 44th through 70th editions of Who's Who in America, the 3rd through 8th editions of Who's Who in American Education, the 1st through 12th editions of Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and the 20th edition of Who's Who in the West. He has also appeared in multiple editions of Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in Finance and Business, and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
