With nearly 30 years of professional experience, Dr. Howard has been the co-founder and chief technology officer of K4M Consulting since 2012 and a principal research scientist with the Dow Chemical Company since 1989. He has also served in a number of other roles with multiple divisions of Dow, including as a senior research chemist, a project leader, a research leader, a senior technical development specialist, a senior research specialist, a research and development leader, and a principal research scientist. His primary functions include handling new technology and new business development as a recognized expert of inorganic materials, electroactive materials, and thermal management of electronics, and he teaches communications classes to employees, which include technical writing and proper channels of communication. He also assists with company expansion by working with business and research and development organizations to seek out and find new opportunities.
Dr. Howard began his career at West Virginia University, obtaining a BS in Chemistry in 1981 and an MS in Inorganic Chemistry in 1983. He went on to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign to earn a PhD in Inorganic Chemistry in 1988 and to serve as a postdoctoral research associate in 1988 and 1989. He decided to pursue a career in chemistry because he believes he can develop new products that would help humanity.
In recognition of his professional achievements, Dr. Howard was selected as the recipient of the Department of Chemistry Alumni Award from West Virginia University in 2010. He previously served as a symposium organizer and session chair for several materials conferences, as a judge for the Physical Sciences and Engineering Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium with West Virginia University, and invited panelist for the West Virginia University Third Annual Energy and Environmental Research Showcase.
