Dr. Cook, who spent more than 40 years in the clinical arena, bench research and academics, is a semi-retired neurologist, Board Certified in Child Neurology. He now spends two weeks per month consulting for Banner Health in Mesa, AZ and Children Rehabilitation Services in Yuma, AZ. Dr. Cook's background in the medical field includes having spent more than 30 years in academia, with the majority of his time at The University of Texas where he served as an associate professor and professor of clinical neurology, director of pediatric neurology at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital, and interim director at Children's Medical Center Child Neurology. He also participated in clinical research at the Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation and taught at The King Saud University for a brief period of time.
Dr. Cook began his career as a student of Purdue University, graduating with a BS in 1965 with Highest Distinction. He continued his studies at Duke University School of Medicine, receiving an MD with Medical Student Award in 1969. During this period, he was a member of a research training program at Duke Medical Center, becoming a pediatric intern there in 1969 and a pediatric resident in 1970. In 1971, Duke Medical Center kept him on their staff, though this time, his residency centered on neurology. After his residency, he became a pediatric neurology fellow at the center, subsequently working as a clinical associate at the National Institutes of Health beginning in 1973. While working as a clinical associate, he began graduate courses and laboratory training in immunology from 1974 to 1976, in addition to working as a medical officer.
After completing his education, Dr. Cook moved to Dallas, TX, where he began working as an assistant professor and chief of neuromuscular disease at the University of Texas Health Science Center and the Veterans Administration Hospital. In 1978, the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Crippled Children hired him as a director of child neurology. He became an associate professor at the University of Texas in 1983, a role he maintained until 1990. He did a two-year sabbatical in Saudi Arabia as a consultant in child neurology of King Faisal Specialist Hospital in 1991 and 1992, and a professor of pediatric faculty of the King Saud University College of Medicine in 1992. He did clinical research with Drs. Gascon and Ozand.
Throughout his career as an esteemed neurologist, Dr. Cook has been a member of various related societies including the American Academy of Neurology, Child Neurology Society, and the Neurological Rehabilitation Society. He has contributed to his field through his research, publications, and role as an educator. He has published 38 abstracts, 24 articles and chapters in books, and 50 articles in scientific journals. In 1978, he was the first to successfully use plasmapharesis to treat chronic relapsing idiopathic polyneuropathy in a child and five years later introduced IV gamma globulin for children with the same disorder. In 1999 and 2002, he was voted one of the Best Doctors in America by the National Registry of Who's Who, as well as one of the Best Child Neurologists in Dallas in 2004. He has been selected as one of the Top Doctors and received a Patients' Choice award from US News and World Report in 2011 and 2012.
