He also teaches at the university as an associate professor.
Born in Athens, Greece, Dr. Polimenakos completed his MD at the University of Athens Medical School in 1995, after first earning his undergraduate degree in biology at National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He completed an internship in general surgery at St. Panteleimon General Hospital and National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, residency in general surgery at St. Vincent's Hospital, New York Medical College, and Case Western Reserve Hospital, and fellowship in thoracic surgery at St. Louis University School of Medicine. He also completed a clinical fellow in the division of cardiothoracic surgery at the Heart Surgery Center, University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine.
A diplomate in thoracic surgery, surgery, and congenital cardiac surgery, Dr. Polimenakos is licensed to practice medicine in Georgia, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Michigan, California, Missouri, and Ohio. After completing his clinical fellow in 2007, he began working as a research lecturer and clinical instructor at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital, University of Michigan. He then spent time as an attending cardiothoracic surgeon for Advocate Hope Children's Hospital in the division of pediatric and congenital cardiothoracic surgery and as an assistant professor of surgery at Rush University Medical Center. Since 2012, Dr. Polimenakos has been serving as the director of pediatric cardiothoracic surgery at Janet Weis Children's Hospital, Geisinger Health, and as an attending cardiothoracic surgeon in the division of pediatric and congenital cardiothoracic surgery at A.I. DuPont Children's Hospital, The Nemours Foundation, while also maintaining his appointments at the Children's Hospital of Georgia and the University of Augusta.
Dr. Polimenakos currently serves on the operating room committee and on the board of clinical directors at the Children's Hospital of Georgia since he joined the faculty in 2014. He volunteers his time by serving as a volunteer council for the Children's Heart Program in Augusta and is active on the Mauritian Trust Fund for Specialized Care and the Palestine Children's Relief Fund. Furthermore, he is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the Congenital Heart Surgeons' Society, the American Association for Physician Leadership, and the European Congenital Heart Surgeons Association, and is an elected fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Furthermore, Dr. Polimenakos has contributed significantly to his field by authoring several articles to professional journals and chapters to textbooks, and he continues to serve on a number of editorial boards and editorial advisory boards.
Included in the 65th edition of Who's Who in America, Dr. Polimenakos has been the recipient of numerous awards for his work, including an Alley-Sheridan Scholarship by the Thoracic Surgery Foundation in 2017, being named an Honorary Ambassador for UNICEF in 2009, and receiving an Award for Commitment Science and Medicine by St. Louis University School of Medicine in 2006. In his down time, Dr. Polimenakos loves being active by skiing, rafting, and swimming, and by playing squash, racquetball, and water polo. He also enjoys playing the classical guitar, listening to jazz and classical music, and doing photography.
