Dr. Wilson is a Canadian physician with a unique talent in ultrasound. She has served as a Clinical Professor of Radiology at the University of Calgary since 2007. She is a practicing physician at the Foothills Medical Center in the Department of Diagnostic Imaging with a cross appointment in the Department of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology. Prior to that, she was a Professor of Radiology at the University of Toronto where she served as the Chief of Ultrasound at the flagship ultrasound department of the Toronto General Hospital, now the University Health Network, from 1984 - 2007. She is renowned for her expertise in the imaging of inflammatory bowel disease with sonography and the diagnosis and investigation of liver cancer using microbubble contrast agents. She has dedicated her career to the advancement and research on the use of microbubble contrast agents for medical imaging.
Dr. Wilson began her career by earning an M.D. with distinction at the University of Alberta in 1970. She then went on to an internship at the University of Calgary, Foothills Hospital followed by a radiology residency at the Toronto General Hospital. She has authored more than 130 peer-reviewed publications and has presented research at more than 400 international conferences. She became the first and only female president of the Canadian Association of Radiologists in 1993, who later awarded her their Gold Medal for her contributions to radiology in Canada. She is a co-editor of the bellwether two-volume reference text book Diagnostic Ultrasound, first published in 1992, and now in its fourth edition. She is a member of the Radiologic Society of North America, the Canadian Association of Radiology, the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine and The Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound. She is the current co-president of the International Contrast Ultrasound Society (ICUS), whose main objective is the advancement of imaging with contrast-enhanced ultrasound for improved, less expensive and safer patient care.
Dr. Wilson was recognized for her outstanding contributions to her specialty with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound in 2012. She was also commended with the Joseph Holmes Pioneer award by the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine in 2012 and the Jean A. Vezina award for excellence and innovation in radiology by the Society Francaise de Radiologie in 2011. For her outstanding service in academia, she was honored with multiple Best Teacher Awards from the body imaging section of the Department of Medical Imaging at the University of Toronto from 1990 - 2006 continuously, the Wightman-Berris academy award for individual teaching excellence in 2005, and the Colin R. Wolfe Award for excellence in continuing education from the University of Toronto in 1992. She delivered the AIUM. William J. Fry honorary lecture in 2016 and was an honoree at the CASL Liver Gala in Calgary in November 2017.
Dr. Wilson is married to Ken Wilson, a semi-retired business man and enthusiastic acapella singer with a renowned Calgary choral group. They have two children. She is an avid golfer and loves to spend relaxing time with her family at their vacation home in La Quinta, CA.
