A current resident of New Jersey, Dr. Mackessy earned a MD from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, now known as Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences, in 1978.
Previously, he served as a general surgeon for St. Vincent's Hospital in New York City, as well as an Orthopedic Surgeon for St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital in New York City, where he completed his residency. He went on to complete his Fellowship in hand and microvascular surgery at Thomas Jefferson University in Pennsylvania. Dr. Mackessy is currently an attending surgeon at Trinitas Regional Medical Center in Elizabeth, NJ, and RWJ Barnabas in Rahway, NJ.
Throughout his impressive career, he has received several accolades for his contributions to his field, including the Healing the Children Award for his work in treating needy children from developing nations. Dr. Mackessy has also received an Outstanding Medical Educator Award from the Medical Society of New Jersey in 2015, and has been recognized to be among the Top Doctors in New Jersey since 2010, by Inside Jersey Magazine. He has also been named by Castle Connolly as a Top Doctor in the New York Metro area for the last 15 years.
In addition to these accomplishments, Dr. Mackessy is a past president of the Jefferson Hand Society, as well as the NJ Orthopaedic Society. He is also a past president of the Elizabeth General Medical Center, and has been named twice as Teacher of the Year by the UMDNJ Department of Orthopaedics.
