His work has led to a host of new products, including defibrillators, an intra-aortic balloon pump for heart failure, prosthetic heart valves, neonatology products, dental care products and especially revolutionary Ultrasonic Phacoemulsifier for cataract surgery and most successful foldable Acrysof Intra Ocular Lens implants for replacement of cataracts.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Patel served in a number of high-level roles with medical device industry organizations. He was with Alcon Laboratories, Inc. (now Novartis AG) as a director of research in intraocular lens from 1989 to 1992, a senior director of research surgical products from 1993 to 2000, and as vice president of research surgical products from 2001 to 2002. Prior to that, he was with Cavitron Corporation and then with CooperVision, Inc. as a chief scientist from 1974 to 1989, as manager of advanced products research from 1979 to 1986, and as director of advanced product research from 1986 to 1989. Early in his career, he was a senior research scientist with Baxter Travenol Laboratories Inc. (now Baxter) from 1968 to 1974.
Dr. Patel began his career by obtaining a BS from the M.S. University of Baroda in Vadodara, India in 1960, traveling to the United States to earn an M.S. from Purdue University in 1963. He then went to Northwestern University to complete a PhD in 1966, and a postdoctoral fellowship in 1967. He later completed the Stanford Executive Program at the Business School of Stanford University in 1993.
Dr. Patel formerly worked in various capacities for the American National Standards Institute between 1988 and 2012, where he served as an appointed technical expert on the International Standards Organization technical committees for Ophthalmic Intraocular Lenses, Ophthalmic Viscoelastic Devices and Ophthalmic Irrigating Solutions. He also spent time with the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation on the pulmonary function devices-spirometer standards subcommittee and as chair of the infrared warmers and incubators standards committee. He is the founder and fellow of the American Society for Lasers in Medicine and Surgery, and a member of a host of other relative organizations such as the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. He holds several patents in his field, and has authored numerous articles in professional journals and chapters in books.
In 2009, Dr. Patel was inducted into the Alcon Hall of Fame for significant contributions in the creation of the world's most successful AcrySof intra-ocular lens implant for the restoration of vision after cataract surgery in more than 100 million eyes, spanning from 2009 through October 2017. He has been included in more than 30 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and Who's Who in the World.
