A longtime communications executive, Dr. Fierheller is well known in Canada for the level of diligence and hard work that he put into his career. After completing his Bachelor's degree at the University of Toronto in 1955, he began working for IBM in Toronto and quickly moved into the role of marketing manager for the company's federal government business in Ottawa. In addition to his undergraduate degree, he received an LLD at Concordia University and DSLitt at Trinity College, University of Toronto. In 1967, he had stepped out of his comfort zone and began a career in entrepreneurship as the owner of Systems Dimensions Limited (SDL), an early cloud computer service. Since that time, SDL became one of Canada's pioneering computer services firms, growing internationally before being acquired by Crown Life. Taking on the role of president and CEO of Premier Cable Systems in Vancouver in 1979, Dr. Fierheller had gone on to lead a team who acquired the first mobile cellular radio licenses in 1983, making way for his new role as founding president and CEO of Rogers Wireless.
Retiring from the industry in 1996, Dr. Fierheller began serving as vice chairman of Rogers Communications and continues to be involved in Toronto's high tech district. Although his career has since come full circle, he will always be known for having founded two of Canada's most innovative companies over the last 50 years.
Remaining active by staying involved with volunteer and charity opportunities, Dr. Fierheller has served as chairman of Carleton University, president of the Toronto Board of Trade, chair of the Greater Toronto Marketing Alliance, and director of the Canadian Institute of Advanced Research. He has also raised more than $450 million throughout his career for various other volunteer projects. Furthermore, he has held some highly respected roles within his community, including as trustee and executive committee member for the National Arts Center, trustee of the Royal Ottawa Hospital and the Vancouver General Hospital Foundation, and chair of the United Ways of Ottawa, Vancouver and Toronto.
Dr. Fierheller has written numerous books about his life and career, including "Finnie's Family: Let Me Say This about That." He has also contributed articles to various journals and magazines. A member of the World President Organization, the Chief Executives Organization, the Canadian Association of Data Processing Service Organizations, and the Canadian Information Processing Society, he has received countless awards for his dedication to the field and his country. Named a member of the Order of Canada for his contributions to society, Dr. Fierheller also received such awards as an Award of Merit by the City of Toronto, a Salute to City Award by the City of Toronto, and was named Outstanding Volunteer of the Year by the Association of Fundraising Professionals.
Married to Glenna E. Fletcher with whom he has two children, Dr. Fierheller has been cited in dozens of editions of Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who in the World.
