A professor emeritus in genetics at Yale University, Dr. Mahoney began his academic medicine and teaching career in 1970 and was a faculty member of the departments of genetics, pediatrics, and obstetrics and gynecology at Yale University. He has been chair of the embryonic stem cell research oversight committee and executive chair of the institutional review boards of Yale, which oversee the welfare of research volunteers at Yale University. Dr. Mahoney has extensively studied medical genetics, fetal disorders, and research ethics during his 55 years in medicine. He was a founding member of the Fetoscopy Group in 1978 and joined in the seminal advances in diagnosis and treatment of the unborn baby via introduction of medical instruments into the pregnant womb. Dr. Mahoney has seen patients in the genetics consultation service throughout his career and has also provided services by working closely with genetic counselors at Yale University. Since the early 1980s he was chief of medical genetics at Yale University School of Medicine.
After receiving an undergraduate degree at Cornell University in 1957, followed by an MD at the University of Pittsburgh in 1962, Dr. Mahoney completed his residency at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and fellowships at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and Yale University School of Medicine. Becoming a diplomate in pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics in 1967 and a diplomate in medical genetics by the American Board of Medical Genetics in 1982, he later returned to school years later to complete a JD at the University of Connecticut. Graduating in 1994, he was admitted to practice by the Connecticut Bar Association later that same year. Since 2004 he has been a certified institutional review board professional (CIP).
Dr. Mahoney has been a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science since 1998, a fellow of the American College of Medical Genetics since 1993, and a fellow of the American Pediatrics Society since 1983. He served on the board of directors for the Society for Inherited Metabolic Disorders in the mid-1980s and served in the same capacity for the American Society of Human Genetics in the early 1980s. He has authored many articles based on his research in professional journals that have included the American Journal of Human Genetics, the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and the Journal of Law and Medical Ethics, and was known for serving on the editorial board for the Journal of BioLaw & Business, Fetal Diagnosis and Therapy, and the American Journal of Medical Genetics. Dr. Mahoney also served as editor for the medical textbook, "Medicine of the Fetus & Mother."
Married to Blanche Katz, Dr. Mahoney has six children. A former captain in the U.S. Army, he served his country in Fort McClellan, AL, from 1966 to 1968. He has been highlighted in close to 30 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, among others.
