A professor and chairman in the department of chemistry in the college of science and technology at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (NCAT), Dr. Assefa was first employed by the university in 2005 as an associate professor. He formerly spent 10 years in the field of nuclear chemistry at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, an American multi-program science and technology national laboratory sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, from 1995 to 2005. He also worked as a research associate at Auburn University and at Texas A&M University, a teaching assistant at the University of Maine, and a chief scientist at Mugher Cement Factory in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, for four years in the mid-1980s.
During his tenure at NCAT, Dr. Assefa was responsible for co-developing the professional science Master's program in Applied Chemistry, co-developing the accelerated Bachelor Master's program in Chemistry, and developing an x-ray crystallographic course, Chem-641. He also participated in the development of an atmospheric chemistry course for the atmospheric sciences and meteorology program, participated in curriculum development, and revised the MAT requirements.
First studying at Addis Ababa University, where Dr. Assefa earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Dr. Assefa pursued a PhD in Physical Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Maine. Graduating in 1992, he began as a post-doctoral researcher at Texas A&M University. His research interests include synthesis and x-ray crystallography of inorganic complexes with a particular emphasis on gold and group 11 metals and lanthanide systems, as well as the coordination of polymeric materials and solid-state materials for a luminescent sensor application of volatile organic compounds in the atmosphere and synthesis and characterization of white light emitting materials, and excited state energy transfer studies for emission enhancement in lanthanide systems.
The results of Dr. Assefa's research have been documented in more than 70 peer reviewed publications and three book chapters. He also served on the editorial board for the Open Crystallography Journal, an associate editor for the Bulletin of the Crystal Society of Ethiopia, and regularly reviewed other professional journals, including the Journal of Solid State Chemistry, the Journal of Physical Chemistry, and the Chemistry of Materials. Furthermore, Dr. Assefa has presented at nearly 100 invited seminars over the past 10 years in his field of expertise.
As an associate member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Chemical Society, and member of the Material Research Society and Phi Kappa Phi, Dr. Assefa also served as a founding member of the Ethiopian Chemical Society in North America. He has also received many awards, including a National Role Model Faculty Mentor Award for Exemplary Achievement in Motivating, Counseling, and Guiding Others by Minority Access, Inc., in 2013. Additionally, Dr. Assefa was awarded with a Merit Teaching Award in the college of arts and sciences at NCAT in 2013, a Merit Teaching Award in the chemistry department at NCAT in 2013, and an Interdisciplinary Research Award in 2012.
He has been included in Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in America for his work, and he has been the recipient of numerous grants throughout his career. Married to Aynalem Eshete since 1990, Dr. Assefa is the proud father of two children.
