Dr. Means is a reputed hematology researcher and educator whose efforts have made outstanding advances in the understanding of red blood cell disorders. Since 2014, Dr. Means has been the dean of Quillen College Medical at East Tennessee State University, a professor of Internal Medicine, and the president of the Medical Education Assistance Corporation. He was a staff physician in the Department of Veterans Affairs for more than 25 years. Previously, Dr. Means served as the University of Kentucky's executive dean and executive vice dean. He was also the senior associate chair, associate research chair of internal medicine, and professor of internal medicine at the University of Kentucky. Further, he served as the director of the division of hematology/oncology, medical professor, head of hematology, and associate division chief at the Medical University of South Carolina, and was an associate medical professor at the University of Cincinnati. In addition, he was chief of medical services at the VA Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky; chief of hematology/oncology at the VA Medical Center in Charleston South Carolina; and assistant chief of hematology/oncology at the VA Medical Center in Cincinnati. Lastly, for Vanderbilt University, Dr. Means was an assistant professor of medicine, instructor of medicine, and fellow in hematology.
Dr. Means is a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine, certified in hematology. In 1983, he received a Doctor of Medicine from Vanderbilt University, and in 1979, a Bachelor of Arts in biochemistry from Rice University. He completed his residency in 1986 at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.
Dr. Means has made a significant impact on the understanding of anemia of chronic disease. He was one of the first researchers to report on the response of anemia of chronic disease to erythropoietin. He also provided the first description of the erythropoietin receptor in polycythemia. In 2016, he received the Founders Medal from the Society for Clinical Investigation for his leadership in his research in the field of hematology.
Dr. Means' research is published in books and professional journals. He is also the associate editor of the Journal of Investigative Medicine and a member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Hematology, Hematology, the American Journal of Medical Science, and Wintrobe's Clinical Hematology, 12th through 14th editions.
Dr. Means served as the associate dean of veterans' affairs at University of Kentucky 2011 to 2012, and the interim director of Markey Cancer Center from s from 2006 to 2009. He was vice president of American Federation for Medical Research, and was the president and executive advisory committee member, and councilor of the Southern Society of Clinical Investigation. He is a member of the American Society of Hematology and the International Society of Experimental Hematology.
Dr. Means was presented with the Career Development Award by the Department of Veterans Affairs. He is also the recipient of the Henry Christian Award from the American Federation of Clinical Research, and the Chief Resident's Faculty of the Year Award from the University of Kentucky. In addition, he was awarded with a fellowship by the American College of Physicians. Dr. Means has been featured in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who in the World.
