Specializing in the research, diagnosis and treatment of endometrial and ovarian cancers, Dr. Mariani serves as a physician with the Mayo Clinic. He is a Professor in Obstetrics and Gynecology and currently serves as the Research Chair of the Obstetrics and Gynecology department. In this position, he has provided important contributions in advancing the care of women with uterine cancer. In particular, he has gained national and international recognition for his studies on the surgical and postoperative management of endometrial cancer. His research is now focused on the role of robotic surgery and sentinel lymph nodes in endometrial cancer; and on the significance of the microbiome and of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) in endometrial and ovarian cancer.
Dr. Mariani began his career at the Universita degli Studi Graduate School in Milano, Italy, obtaining a medical degree in 1993 and completing a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at San Raffaele Hospital in 1997. He then traveled to the United States to complete a research fellowship in gynecologic oncology at the Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education. He went on to earn an MS and complete a fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology from the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science in 2005.
Drawing upon more than 20 years of professional experience, Dr. Mariani collaborates with the Division of Gynecologic Surgery on the use of robotic surgery for the treatment of endometrial cancer. He is also a member of the Surgical Robotics Committee, which oversees the development of the robotic surgery practice at Mayo Clinic from a clinical, organizational, educational and research point of view. He also serves as the gynecology surgery representative in the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center Practice Committee, and he provides his service in multiple other committees at the Mayo Clinic.
Throughout his career, Dr. Mariani has contributed more than 150 peer-reviewed publications to medical journals pertaining to his areas of focus. He serves as an advisory member of the Minnesota Ovarian Cancer Alliance, and panel member of the National Comprehensive Network: Cervical/Uterine/Vulvar Cancers Guidelines. He also maintains involvement with American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, American College of Surgeons, Society of Gynecologic Oncologists, American Association of Medicine and the Person, and International Gynecologic Cancer Society. In recognition of his commitment to the field of gynecologic oncology, he was honored as a "Doctor in Gynecologic Oncology" (PhD) by the University of Utrecht. Also, he has been elected as honorary member of the Turkish Gynecologic Cancer Society. He was also selected as a recipient of the J. G. Moore Award at the Western Association of Gynecologic Oncologists.
